Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:12379 حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْجَارُودِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثنا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ ظَبْيَانَ الْمَازِنِيُّ ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْوَرَّاقُ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَطَاءِ بْنِ مُقَدَّمٍ ثنا حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً فِيهَا الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ فَلَمَّا أَتَوُا الْقَوْمَ وَجَدُوهُمْ قَدْ تَفَرَّقُوا وَبَقِيَ رَجُلٌ لَهُ مَالٌ كَثِيرٌ لَمْ يَبْرَحْ فَقَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَأَهْوَى إِلَيْهِ الْمِقْدَادُ فَقَتَلَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ قَتَلْتَ رَجُلًا قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهِ لَيُذْكَرَنَّ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ رَجُلًا شَهِدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَقَتَلَهُ الْمِقْدَادُ فَقَالَ ادْعُوا لِي الْمِقْدَادَ فَقَالَ يَا مِقْدَادُ قَتَلْتَ رَجُلًا قَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَكَيْفَ لَكَ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ؟ قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا وَلَا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فَعِنْدَ اللهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِيرَةٌ كَذَلِكَ كُنْتُمْ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَمَنَّ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ} فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «كَانَ رَجُلًا مُؤْمِنًا يُخْفِي إِيمَانَهُ مَعَ قَوْمٍ كُفَّارٍ فَقَتَلْتَهُ وَكَذَلِكَ كُنْتَ أَنْتَ تُخْفِي إِيمَانَكَ بِمَكَّةَ»
English Translation
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent out a military expedition that included al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad. When they reached the people, they found them scattered, and one man who had much wealth remained behind. He said: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah.' But al-Miqdad struck and killed him. A companion said to him: 'You killed a man who said La ilaha illa Allah! By Allah, this will be mentioned to the Prophet (peace be upon him).' When they came to the Prophet (peace be upon him), they said: 'O Messenger of Allah, a man testified that there is no god but Allah, but al-Miqdad killed him.' He said: 'Call al-Miqdad to me.' He said: 'O Miqdad, you killed a man who said La ilaha illa Allah. How will you face La ilaha illa Allah?' Then Allah revealed: {O you who believe, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, investigate and do not say to one who gives you the greeting of peace: "You are not a believer," seeking the goods of this worldly life, for with Allah are many gains. Thus you were before, then Allah conferred His favor upon you.} The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'He was a believing man who concealed his faith among a disbelieving people, and you killed him. Likewise, you used to conceal your faith in Makkah.'
