Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:12207 حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْأَبَّارُ وَالْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ قَالَا ثنا أُمَيَّةُ بْنُ بِسْطَامٍ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ عَنْ رَوْحِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ صَيْفِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْبَدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَمَّا بَعَثَ مُعَاذًا عَلَى الْيَمَنِ قَالَ «إِنَّكَ تَقْدُمُ عَلَى قَوْمٍ أَهْلِ كِتَابٍ فَلْيَكُنْ أَوَّلُ مَا تَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَيْهِ عُبَادَةَ اللهِ فَإِذَا عَرَفُوا ذَلِكَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ اللهَ ﷻ فَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي يَوْمِهِمْ وَلَيْلَتِهِمْ فَإِذَا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ اللهَ قَدْ فَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ زَكَاةً تُؤْخَذُ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ فَتُرَدُّ عَلَى فُقَرَائِهِمْ فَإِذَا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ فَخُذْ مِنْهُمْ وَاتَّقِ كَرَائِمَ أَمْوَالِهِمْ»
English Translation
Ibn Abbas narrated that when the Messenger of Allah ♂ sent Mu'adh to Yemen, he said: "You are going to a people who are People of the Book. Let the first thing you call them to be the worship of Allah. When they recognize that, inform them that Allah the Exalted has obligated upon them five prayers in their day and night. When they do that, inform them that Allah has obligated upon them a charity (zakah) that is taken from their wealth and given to their poor. When they do that, take it from them, and beware of the best of their properties."
