When people learned that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to appoint Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as his successor, some said: What will he say to his Lord when he meets Him? He appointed over us a harsh and severe man — he cannot even do anything now, so what will happen when he gains power? When this reached Abu Bakr, he said: 'Are you threatening me with my Lord? I will say: I appointed the best of Your people over them.' Then he sent for Umar and advised him: 'Indeed, Allah has deeds for the night that He does not accept during the day, and deeds for the day that He does not accept at night. Know that no voluntary act will be accepted until the obligatory ones are fulfilled. Have you not seen that when Allah mentioned the people of Paradise, He mentioned them by their best deeds, because He overlooked their bad ones — until one might say: How can my deeds reach this level? And when Allah mentioned the people of the Fire, He mentioned them by their worst deeds, because He rejected their good ones — until one might say: My deeds are surely better than this! Have you not seen that Allah revealed both hope and fear, so that the believer would fear and thereby act, and hope and thereby not cast himself into destruction? Have you not seen that those whose scales are heavy on the Day of Resurrection — their scales were heavy because they followed the truth and left falsehood — and rightly so, for a scale in which only truth is placed must be heavy? Have you not seen that those whose scales are light — their scales were light because they followed falsehood and left the truth — and rightly so, for a scale in which only falsehood is placed must be light? If you heed my advice, nothing absent will be more beloved to you than death, which you must inevitably meet. But if you waste my advice, nothing absent will be more hateful to you than death, and you cannot escape it.'

جب لوگوں کو یہ خبر پہنچی کہ سیدنا ابو بکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو اپنا خلیفہ مقرر کرنے کا ارادہ کیا، تو کچھ لوگوں نے کہا: وہ ہمارے اوپر ایک سخت، غصے والا شخص مقرر کر رہا ہے، وہ تو کچھ بھی نہیں کر پائے گا، پھر جب وہ طاقت حاصل کرے گا تو کیا ہوگا؟ یہ بات سیدنا ابو بکر رضی اللہ عنہ تک پہنچی، تو انہوں نے کہا: کیا تم مجھے اپنے رب سے ڈرا رہے ہو؟ میں تو یہ کہوں گا کہ میں نے اپنے بہترین اہلکار کو تمہارا رہنما مقرر کیا ہے۔ پھر سیدنا ابو بکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو لکھا: یاد رکھو! اللہ کی کچھ عبادتیں رات کے وقت مخصوص ہیں جنہیں دن میں نہیں کیا جا سکتا، اور کچھ دن کے وقت مخصوص ہیں جنہیں رات میں نہیں کیا جا سکتا۔ اور جان لو کہ نفل عبادتیں کبھی بھی قبول نہیں ہوں گی جب تک فرض عبادتیں ادا نہ کی جائیں۔ کیا تم نے نہیں دیکھا کہ اللہ عزوجل نے اہل جنت کا ذکر اس طرح کیا کہ ان کے بہترین اعمال کو ذکر کیا؟ اور اس کی وجہ یہ ہے کہ اللہ عزوجل نے ان کی برائیوں کو معاف کر دیا، تب وہ یہ کہتے ہیں کہ ہمارے اعمال اتنے اچھے کیسے ہو سکتے ہیں؟ اور جب اللہ عزوجل نے اہل نار کا ذکر کیا تو ان کے بدترین اعمال کا ذکر کیا، کیونکہ اللہ عزوجل نے ان کے اچھے اعمال کو رد کر دیا، اور وہ یہ کہتے ہیں: کیا ہمارا عمل اس سے بہتر نہیں تھا؟ کیا تم نے نہیں دیکھا کہ اللہ عزوجل نے دونوں خواہشات یعنی رغبت اور خوف پیدا کی ہیں تاکہ مومن خوف سے عمل کرے اور رغبت سے گناہ سے بچ کر عمل کرے؟ کیا تم نے نہیں دیکھا کہ قیامت کے دن جن کے وزن اچھے ہوں گے وہ حق کے پیچھے چلنے اور باطل کو چھوڑنے کے سبب ان کے وزن میں اضافہ ہوگا؟ اور یہ حق کے مطابق ہی ہوگا، اور وہ اس میں ٹھہریں گے۔ اور جو لوگ باطل کے پیچھے چلیں گے اور حق کو چھوڑ دیں گے ان کا وزن ہلکا ہوگا۔ اور یہ باطل کے مطابق ہوگا، اور وہ اس میں کمزور ہوں گے۔ پھر سیدنا ابو بکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: اگر تم نے میری وصیت پر عمل کیا تو تمہارے لیے موت سے زیادہ عزیز کچھ نہ ہوگا، کیونکہ تم اس سے ملنے والے ہو۔ اور اگر تم نے میری وصیت ضائع کر دی تو تمہارے لیے موت سے زیادہ ناخوشگوار کچھ نہ ہوگا، اور تم اسے مفر نہیں پا سکتے۔[سنن سعید بن منصور/كتاب التفسير/حدیث: 942]
