Arabic (Original)
وعن معاذ بن جبل ، رضي الله عنه ، قال: كنت ردف النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، على حمار فقال: " يا معاذ هل تدري ما حق الله على عباده، وما حق العباد على الله. ؟ قلت: الله ورسوله أعلم. قال:"فإن حق الله على العباد أن يعبدوه، ولا يشركوا به شيئاً، وحق العباد على الله أن لا يعذب من لا يشرك به شيئاً، فقلت، يا رسول الله أفلا أبشر الناس؟ قال لا تبشرهم فيتكلوا" ((متفق عليه)) .
English Translation
Hadrat Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be well pleased with him) reported that I was riding a pillion with the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) on a donkey. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, "O Hadrat Mu'adh, do you know what is the right of Allah upon His slaves, and what is the Right of His slaves upon Allah?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know better". Upon this the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated, "Allah's Right upon His slaves is that they should worship Him Alone and associate nothing with Him; and His slaves' right upon Him is that he should not punish who does not associate a thing with Him." He (Hadrat Mu'adh) added: I said to the Beloved Messenger of Allah: "Shall I give the glad tidings to people?" He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, "Do not tell them this good news for they will depend on it alone"..
Urdu Translation
حضرت معاذ بن جبل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ گدھے پر پیچھے سوار تھا۔ آپ نے فرمایا: "اے حضرت معاذ! کیا تم جانتے ہو اللہ کا اپنے بندوں پر کیا حق ہے اور بندوں کا اللہ پر کیا حق ہے؟" میں نے عرض کیا: اللہ اور اس کے رسول بہتر جانتے ہیں۔ آپ نے فرمایا: "اللہ کا اپنے بندوں پر حق یہ ہے کہ وہ اس کی عبادت کریں اور کسی کو اس کا شریک نہ ٹھہرائیں، اور بندوں کا اللہ پر حق یہ ہے کہ جو اس کے ساتھ کسی کو شریک نہ ٹھہرائے اسے عذاب نہ دے۔" میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! کیا میں لوگوں کو خوشخبری نہ سنا دوں؟ آپ نے فرمایا: "انہیں خوشخبری مت سناؤ ورنہ وہ (اسی پر) بھروسہ کر لیں گے۔" (متفق علیہ)
