English Translation
Narrated Abu al-Bakhtari (may Allah have mercy on him): We went out for 'Umrah, and when we reached the middle of (the place) Nakhlah, everyone began to look for the crescent. Some, upon seeing it, said: This is a three-night-old crescent (because of its largeness), and some said: It is two nights old. Then we met Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and mentioned to him that we had seen the crescent, and some said it was three nights old and some said it was two nights old. Then Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked: On which night did you see it? We said: On such-and-such a night. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah, the Exalted, extended it (in visibility) for the sake of being seen. It was of the same night on which you saw it."
Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابوالبختری رحمہ اللہ کہتے ہیں کہہم عمرہ کو نکلے اور جب (مقام) نخلہ کے درمیان میں پہنچے تو سب نے چاند دیکھنا شروع کر دیا اور بعضوں نے دیکھ کر کہا کہ یہ تین رات کا چاند ہے (یعنی بڑا ہونے کی وجہ سے) اور بعضوں نے کہا کہ دو رات کا ہے۔ پھر ہم سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما ملے اور ان سے ذکر کیا کہ ہم نے چاند کو دیکھا اور کسی نے کہا کہ تین رات کا ہے اور کسی نے کہا دو رات کا ہے۔ تب ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے پوچھا کہ تم نے کون سی رات میں دیکھا؟ تو ہم نے کہا کہ فلاں فلاں رات میں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا ہے کہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس کو دیکھنے کے لئے بڑھا دیا۔ وہ اسی رات کا تھا جس رات تم نے دیکھا۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 577]
