English Translation
Hafs bin Asim said: I was with Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the road to Makkah, and he led us in two rak'ahs of Zuhr. Then he came, and we came with him, until he reached his stopping place and sat down, and we sat down with him. Suddenly his glance fell towards the place where the prayer had been offered, and he saw some people standing. He asked: What are they doing? I said: They are praying the sunnah prayers. He said: If I were to pray the sunnah, I would complete the prayer itself (that is, pray the full four rak'ahs of the obligatory prayer). Then he said: O my nephew! I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) during travel, and he never prayed more than two rak'ahs as long as he lived. And I accompanied Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too never prayed more than two rak'ahs as long as he lived. And I accompanied Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too never prayed more than two as long as he lived. And I accompanied Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too never prayed more than two as long as he lived. And Allah has said: For you the blessed life of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is a beautiful example. [Mukhtasar Sahih Muslim/Hadith: 441]
Urdu Translation
حفص بن عاصم نے کہا کہمیں مکہ کی راہ میں سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کے ساتھ تھا تو انہوں نے ہمیں ظہر کی دو رکعتیں پڑھائیں پھر آئے اور ہم بھی ان کے ساتھ آئے یہاں تک کہ اپنے اترنے کی جگہ پہنچے اور بیٹھ گئے اور ہم بھی ان کے ساتھ بیٹھ گئے۔ اچانک ان کی نگاہ اس طرف پڑی جہاں نماز پڑھی تھی، تو کچھ لوگوں کو کھڑے دیکھا تو پوچھا کہ یہ کیا کر رہے ہیں؟ میں نے کہا کہ سنتیں پڑھ رہے ہیں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ مجھے سنت پڑھنی ہوتی تو میں نماز ہی پوری پڑھتا (یعنی فرض پورے چار رکعت پڑھتا)۔ پھر کہا کہ اے بھتیجے! میں سفر میں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی صحبت میں رہا تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے تاحیات دو رکعت سے زیادہ نہیں پڑھیں۔ اور سیدنا ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کے ساتھ رہا تو انہوں نے بھی تاحیات دو رکعت سے زیادہ نہ پڑھیں۔ اور سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کے ساتھ رہا تو انہوں نے بھی تاحیات دو سے زیادہ نہ پڑھیں۔ اور سیدنا عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ کے ساتھ رہا تو انہوں نے بھی تاحیات دو سے زیادہ نہ پڑھیں۔ اور اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا ہے کہ تمہارے لئے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی حیات طیبہ اسوہ حسنہ ہے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 441]
