English Translation
Narrated Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) addressed us and said, "You will travel today after the sun's decline and through all your night, and, if Allah wills, tomorrow morning you will reach water." So the people traveled in such a way that no one paid attention to anyone else. Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) kept traveling until it was the middle of the night, and I was at his side, and he (peace be upon him) began to doze and leaned over from his mount (from the overpowering sleep). I came and propped him up (so that he would not fall) without waking him (peace be upon him), until he (peace be upon him) sat up straight again. Then he traveled on until, when much of the night had passed, he (peace be upon him) leaned over again and I propped him up again without waking him (peace be upon him), until he (peace be upon him) sat up straight again. Then he traveled on until the end of the last part of the night, and then he leaned over once more, even more than the previous two times, so that he was about to fall. Then I came and steadied him (peace be upon him). He raised his head and said, 'Who is this?' I said, 'Abu Qatadah.' He (peace be upon him) said, 'Since when have you been traveling with me like this?' I said, 'I have been traveling with you in this way since (the beginning of) the night.' He (peace be upon him) said, 'May Allah protect you as you have protected His Prophet.' Then he said, 'Do you see us hidden from people's eyes?' Then he (peace be upon him) said, 'Do you see anyone?' I said, 'Here is a rider,' then I said, 'Here is another rider,' until we had gathered seven riders. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) turned aside from the road, placed his head on the ground (to sleep), and said, 'Keep watch over our prayer for us (that is, wake us at the time of prayer).' Then the first to awaken was the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) himself, and the sunlight had come upon his back. Then we got up in alarm, and he (peace be upon him) said, 'Mount,' so we mounted and traveled on until, when the sun had risen high, he (peace be upon him) dismounted and called for his ablution vessel which I had, and in it was a little water. Then he (peace be upon him) performed ablution with it (which was less than the usual ablution, that is, very quickly with very little water), and a little water remained in it. Then he said to Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), 'Keep our vessel safe, for it will have a remarkable matter.' Then Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan for the prayer, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs (of Sunnah), then performed the obligatory Fajr prayer, and performed it just as he performed it every day. Then he (peace be upon him) and we with him mounted. Then some of us began whispering to one another, 'What will be the expiation for this shortcoming of ours, that we fell short in the prayer?' Then he (peace be upon him) said, 'Am I not an example for you?' Then he said, 'There is no shortcoming in sleeping. The shortcoming is only that a person does not pray until the time of the other prayer comes (that is, delays it while awake). So whoever does this (that is, misses a prayer), let him pray it when he becomes aware (of it), and when the next day comes, let him pray his prayer at its appointed time (that is, missing it once does not change the prayer's time).' Then he said, 'What do you think the people have done?' Then he said, 'When the people awoke in the morning and did not find their Prophet (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said, The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is behind you; he is not one to leave you behind. But other people said, The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is ahead of you. So if those people had accepted the word of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), they would have found the right path.' (The Prophet gave this news as a miracle.) The narrator said, Then we reached the people when the day had risen high and everything had become hot, and the people began saying, 'O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! We are dying and thirsty.' He (peace be upon him) said, 'No, you are not dying.' Then he said, 'Bring our small cup,' and he called for the vessel and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) began pouring water and Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) began giving the people to drink. Then when the people saw that the water was only a vessel-full, they began to crowd around it (that is, everyone feared the water was little, lest he be deprived). Then he (peace be upon him) said, 'Take it gently and calmly; all of you will be quenched.' So the people began taking it calmly, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) poured and I gave to drink, until no one remained except me and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The narrator said, The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then poured and said to me, 'Drink!' I said, 'I will not drink until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) drinks.' He (peace be upon him) said, 'The one who gives a people to drink is the last of them to drink.' So I drank. The narrator said, Then the people reached the water happy and satisfied. The narrator said, Abdullah bin Rabah said, I was narrating this very hadith to the people in the congregational mosque when Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'O young man, consider what you say, for I was one of the riders that night.' He said, I said, 'Then you must be well acquainted with this hadith.' He said, 'From which people are you?' I said, 'I am of the Ansar.' He said, 'Narrate, for you know your traditions well.' Then I narrated the full report to the people. Then Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'I too was present that night, but I do not know that anyone else remembered it as you have remembered it.'"
Urdu Translation
سیدنا ابوقتادہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہرسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے ہمیں خطاب کرتے ہوئے فرمایا: تم آج زوال کے بعد اور اپنی ساری رات چلو اگر اللہ نے چاہا تو کل صبح پانی پر پہنچو گے۔ پس لوگ اس طرح چلے کہ کوئی کسی کی طرف متوجہ نہ ہوتا تھا۔ سیدنا ابوقتادہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمچلے جاتے تھے، یہاں تک کہ آدھی رات ہو گئی اور میں آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پہلو کی طرف تھا اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماونگھنے لگے اور اپنی سواری پر سے جھکے (یعنی نیند کے غلبہ سے) اور میں نے آ کر آپ کو ٹیکہ دیا (تاکہ گر نہ پڑیں) بغیر اس کے کہ میں آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو جگاؤں، یہاں تک کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمپھر سیدھے ہو کر بیٹھ گئے۔ پھر چلے یہاں تک کہ جب بہت رات گزر گئی، پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمجھکے اور میں نے پھر ٹیکہ دیا بغیر اس کے کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو جگاؤں، یہاں تک کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمپھر سیدھے ہو کر بیٹھ گئے۔ پھر چلے یہاں تک کہ آخر سحر کا وقت ہو گیا، پھر ایک بار بہت جھکے کہ اگلے دو بار سے بھی زیادہ، قریب تھا کہ گر پڑیں۔ پھر میں آیا اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو روک دیا۔ پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے سر اٹھایا اور فرمایا یہ کون ہے؟ میں نے عرض کیا کہ ابوقتادہ۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ تم کب سے میرے ساتھ اس طرح چل رہے ہو؟ میں نے عرض کیا کہ میں رات سے آپ کے ساتھ اسی طرح چل رہا ہوں۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ اللہ تعالیٰ تمہاری حفاظت کرے جیسے تم نے اس کے نبی کی حفاظت کی ہے۔ پھر آپ نے فرمایا کہ تم ہمیں دیکھتے ہو کہ ہم لوگوں کی نظروں میں پوشیدہ ہیں؟ پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ تم کسی کو دیکھتے ہو؟ میں نے کہا کہ یہ ایک سوار ہے، پھر میں نے کہا کہ یہ ایک اور سوار ہے، یہاں تک کہ ہم سات سوار جمع ہو گئے۔ تب رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمراہ سے ایک طرف الگ ہوئے اور اپنا سرزمین پر رکھا (یعنی سونے کو) اور فرمایا کہ تم لوگ ہماری نماز کا خیال رکھنا (یعنی نماز کے وقت جگا دینا)۔ پھر پہلے جو جاگے وہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمہی تھے اور دھوپ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی پیٹھ پر آ گئی تھی پھر ہم لوگ گھبرا کر اٹھے اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ سوار ہو جاؤ تو ہم سوار ہوئے پھر چلے یہاں تک کہ جب دھوپ چڑھ گئی تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماترے اپنا وضو کا لوٹا منگوایا جو میرے پاس تھا اور اس میں تھوڑا سا پانی تھا، پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اس سے وضو کیا (جو عام وضو سے کم تھا یعنی بہت قلیل پانی سے بہت جلد) اور اس میں تھوڑا سا پانی باقی رہ گیا۔ پھر ابوقتادہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے فرمایا کہ ہمارے لوٹے کو رکھ چھوڑو کہ اس کی ایک عجیب کیفیت ہو گی۔ پھر سیدنا بلال رضی اللہ عنہ نے نماز کیلئے اذان کہی اور نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے دو رکعت نماز پڑھی، پھر صبح کی فرض نماز ادا کی اور ویسے ہی ادا کی جیسے ہر روز ادا کرتے تھے۔ اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمبھی اور ہم بھی آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ سوار ہوئے، پھر ہم میں سے بعض دوسرے سے چپکے چپکے کہتا تھا کہ آج ہمارے اس قصور کا کیا کفارہ ہو گا جو ہم نے نماز میں قصور کیا تب آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ کیا میں تم لوگوں کے لئے اسوہ نہیں ہوں؟ پھر فرمایا کہ سونے میں کیا قصور ہے؟ قصور تو یہ ہے کہ ایک آدمی نماز نہ پڑھے، یہاں تک کہ دوسری نماز کا وقت آ جائے (یعنی جاگنے میں قضاء کرے) پھر جو ایسا کرے (یعنی اس کی قضاء ہو جائے تو) لازم ہے کہ جب ہوشیار ہو، ادا کرے۔ اور جب دوسرا دن آئے تو اپنی نماز اوقات متعینہ پر ادا کرے (یعنی یہ نہیں کہ ایک بار قضاء ہو جانے سے نماز کا وقت ہی بدل جائے)۔ پھر فرمایا کہ تم کیا خیال کرتے ہو کہ لوگوں نے کیا کیا ہو گا؟ پھر فرمایا کہ لوگوں نے جب صبح کی تو اپنے نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو نہ پایا۔ تب ابوبکر اور عمر (رضی اللہ عنہما) نے کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمتمہارے پیچھے ہوں گے، آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمایسے نہیں کہ تمہیں پیچھے چھوڑ جائیں اور دوسرے لوگوں نے کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمتم سے آگے ہیں۔ پھر وہ لوگ اگر ابوبکر اور عمر (رضی اللہ عنہما) کی بات مانتے تو سیدھی راہ پاتے (یہ خبر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے معجزہ کے طور پر دی)۔ راوی نے کہا کہ پھر ہم لوگوں تک پہنچے، یہاں تک کہ دن کافی چڑھ آیا تھا اور ہر چیز گرم ہو گئی تھی اور لوگ کہنے لگے کہ اے اللہ کے رسولصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! ہم تو مر گئے اور پیاسے ہو گئے۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا نہیں تم نہیں مرے۔ پھر فرمایا کہ ہمارا چھوٹا پیالہ لاؤ اور وہ لوٹا منگوایا اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمپانی ڈالنے لگے اور سیدنا ابوقتادہ رضی اللہ عنہ لوگوں کو پانی پلانے لگے۔ پھر جب لوگوں نے دیکھا کہ پانی ایک لوٹا بھر ہی ہے تو لوگ اس پر گرنے لگے (یعنی ہر شخص ڈرنے لگا کہ پانی تھوڑا ہے کہیں محروم نہ رہ جاؤں) تب آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ اچھی طرح آہستگی سے لیتے رہو، تم سب سیراب ہو جاؤ گے۔ غرض کہ پھر لوگ اطمینان سے لینے لگے اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمپانی ڈالتے تھے اور میں پلاتا تھا یہاں تک کہ میرے اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے سوا کوئی باقی نہ رہا (راوی نے) کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے پھر ڈالا اور مجھ سے فرمایا کہ پیو! میں نے عرض کیا کہ میں نہ پیوں گا جب تک اللہ کے رسول آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنہ پئیں گے۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ قوم کا پلانے والا سب کے آخر میں پیتا ہے۔ پھر میں نے پیا (راوی نے) کہا کہ پھر لوگ پانی پر خوش خوش اور آسودہ پہنچے (راوی نے) کہا کہ عبداللہ بن رباح نے کہا کہ میں جامع مسجد میں لوگوں سے یہی حدیث بیان کرتا تھا کہ سیدنا عمران بن حصین رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اے جوان غور کرو کہ تم کیا کہتے ہو، اس لئے کہ میں اس رات کا ایک سوار تھا۔ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے کہا پھر تو آپ اس حدیث سے خوب واقف ہوں گے انہوں نے کہا کہ تم کس قوم سے ہو؟ میں نے کہا میں انصار میں سے ہوں۔ انہوں نے کہا بیان کرو کہ تم تو اپنی حدیثوں کو خوب جانتے ہو۔ پھر میں نے لوگوں سے پوری روایت بیان کی۔ تب سیدنا عمران رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ میں بھی اس رات حاضر تھا مگر میں نہیں جانتا کہ جیسا تم نے یاد رکھا ایسا اور کسی نے یاد رکھا ہو۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 229]
