English Translation
Narrated Mukhtar bin Fulful: I asked Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about praying voluntary prayer after Asr, and he said, "Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to strike the hands of those who prayed after Asr, and we, in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), used to pray two rak'ahs after sunset before the Maghrib prayer." I said to him, "Did the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) also pray these two rak'ahs?" He said, "He used to see us praying them, and he neither commanded it (that is, as an obligation) nor forbade it."
Urdu Translation
مختار بن فلفل کہتے ہیں کہمیں نے سیدنا انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ سے عصر کے بعد نفل پڑھنے کے بارے میں پوچھا تو انہوں نے کہا کہ سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ عصر کے بعد نماز پڑھنے والوں کے ہاتھوں پر مارتے تھے اور ہم رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے دور میں غروب آفتاب کے بعد نماز مغرب سے پہلے دو رکعت پڑھتے تھے۔ میں نے ان سے کہا کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمبھی یہ دو رکعتیں پڑھا کرتے تھے؟ انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم کو پڑھتے ہوئے دیکھا کرتے تھے اور نہ اس کا حکم کرتے (یعنی بطریق وجوب کے)، اور نہ اس سے منع فرماتے تھے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 222]
