English Translation
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in a field, and he (peace be upon him) was leaning on a stick, when he (peace be upon him) passed by a group of Jews. One of them said to another: Ask him about the soul (ruh). Another said: What doubt do you have that you should ask? Lest he say something you dislike. Then they said: Ask him. So some of them stood up and came to him (peace be upon him) and asked about the soul. He (peace be upon him) remained silent and gave no reply. I realized that revelation was coming to him (peace be upon him). He says: I remained standing in that place. When the revelation had come down, he (peace be upon him) recited this verse: "They ask you about the soul; say: The soul is a matter of my Lord's command, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little."
Urdu Translation
سیدنا عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہمیں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ ایک کھیت میں جا رہا تھا اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمایک لکڑی پر ٹیکا دئیے ہوئے تھے کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمیہود کے ایک گروہ کے پاس سے گزرے۔ ان میں سے ایک نے دوسرے سے کہا کہ ان سے روح کے بارے میں پوچھو۔ دوسرے نے کہا کہ تمہیں کیا شبہہ ہے جو پوچھتے ہو؟ ایسا نہ ہو کہ وہ کوئی ایسی بات کہیں جو تمہیں بری معلوم ہو۔ پھر انہوں نے کہا کہ پوچھو۔ آخر ان میں سے کچھ لوگ اٹھے اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی طرف آئے اور روح کے بارے میں پوچھا تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمخاموش ہو رہے اور کچھ جواب نہ دیا۔ میں سمجھا کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمپر وحی آ رہی ہے۔ کہتے ہیں کہ میں اسی جگہ کھڑا رہا۔ جب وحی اتر چکی تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے یہ آیت پڑھی کہ”تجھ سے روح کے بارے میں پوچھتے ہیں تو کہہ دو کہ روح میرے رب کا ایک حکم ہے اور تم علم نہیں دئیے گئے مگر تھوڑا“۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 2144]
