English Translation
Sayyiduna Khalid ibn Umayr al-Adawi said: (The governor of Basra) Utba ibn Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to us. After praising and glorifying Allah, he said: To proceed — know that the world has announced its coming to an end, and nothing remains of it except like the little water that remains in a vessel, which its owner drinks. And you are moving on from the world to an abode that has no decline; so go forth having done good deeds in your lifetime, for it has been related to us that a stone will be cast from the upper edge of Hell and will keep descending in it for seventy years without reaching its bottom. By Allah! Hell will be filled. Are you amazed? And it has been related to us that the distance from one side of the gate of Paradise to the other is forty years' travel, and a day will come when it will be crowded with the throng of people. And I see myself as one of seven persons who were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and we had nothing to eat but the leaves of trees, until the corners of our mouths became sore (from the heat and roughness of the leaves). I found a cloak and tore it into two pieces; I made a lower garment from one piece and Sa'd ibn Malik from the other. Now, today, there is not one of us but that he is the governor of some city; and I seek refuge in Allah from regarding myself as great while being small in the sight of Allah. Indeed, no prophet's prophethood ever endured forever (in the world); rather, its effect passed away (in a short time), until its final outcome was that it became a kingdom. So soon you will see and experience the rulers who come after us (that the matters of religion, which are the effect of prophethood, will not remain in them, and they will become entirely worldly).
Urdu Translation
سیدنا خالد بن عمیر عدوی کہتے ہیں کہ(امیر بصرہ) عتبہ بن غزوان رضی اللہ عنہ نے ہمیں خطبہ دیا تو اللہ تعالیٰ کی حمد و ثناء کے بعد کہا کہ بعد حمد و صلوٰۃ کے معلوم ہو کہ دنیا نے ختم ہونے کی خبر دی؟ اور دنیا میں سے کچھ باقی نہ رہا مگر جیسے برتن میں کچھ بچا ہوا پانی رہ جاتا ہے جس کو اس کا صاحب پیتا ہے۔ اور تم دنیا سے ایسے گھر کو جانے والے ہو جس کو زوال نہیں، پس اپنی زندگی میں نیک عمل کر کے جاؤ، اس لئے کہ ہم سے بیان کیا گیا کہ پتھر جہنم کے اوپر کے کنارے سے ڈالا جائے گا اور ستر برس تک اس میں اترتا جائے گا اور اس کی تہہ کو نہ پہنچے گا۔ اللہ کی قسم! جہنم بھری جائے گی۔ کیا تم تعجب کرتے ہو؟ اور ہم سے بیان کیا گیا کہ جنت کے دروازے کی ایک طرف سے لے کر دوسری طرف کنارے تک چالیس برس کی راہ ہے اور ایک دن ایسا آئے گا کہ دروازہ لوگوں کے ہجوم سے بھرا ہوا ہو گا اور میں اپنے آپ کو دیکھ رہا ہوں کہ میں سات شخصوں میں سے ساتواں شخص تھا جو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ تھے اور ہمارا کھانا درخت کے پتوں کے سوا کچھ نہ تھا یہاں تک کہ ہماری باچھیں زخمی ہو گئیں (بوجہ پتوں کی حرارت اور سختی کے)۔ میں نے ایک چادر پائی اور اس کو پھاڑ کر دو ٹکڑے کئے، ایک ٹکڑے کا میں نے تہبند بنایا اور دوسرے ٹکڑے کا سعد بن مالک نے۔ اب آج کے روز کوئی ہم میں سے ایسا نہیں ہے کہ کسی شہر کا حاکم نہ ہو اور میں اس بات سے اللہ کی پناہ مانگتا ہوں کہ میں اپنے آپ کو بڑا سمجھوں، لیکن اللہ کے نزدیک چھوٹا ہوں اور بیشک کسی پیغمبر کی نبوت (دنیا میں) ہمیشہ نہیں رہی بلکہ نبوت کا اثر (تھوڑی مدت میں) جاتا رہا؟ یہاں تک کہ اس کا آخری انجام یہ ہوا کہ وہ سلطنت ہو گئی۔ پس عنقریب تم ہمارے بعد آنے والے امراء کو دیکھو گے اور تجربہ کرو گے ان امیروں کا جو ہمارے بعد آئیں گے (کہ ان میں دین کی باتیں جو نبوت کا اثر ہے، نہ رہیں گی اور وہ بالکل دنیادار ہو جائیں گے)۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 2085]
