English Translation
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We set out on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in which the people suffered much hardship (of food and drink). 'Abdullah bin Ubayy (the hypocrite) said to his fellow hypocrites, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) until they disperse from him." Zuhayr said: This is the recitation of the one who reads 'man hawlahu' (and this is the well-known recitation, and the anomalous recitation is 'man hawlahu,' that is, 'until those who are around him, peace be upon him, disperse'). And 'Abdullah bin Ubayy the hypocrite said, "If we return to Madinah, the mightier (i.e., the accursed one called himself the mighty) will surely drive out the weaker (i.e., the accursed one called the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, the weaker)." Hearing this, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and told him. So he (peace be upon him) sent for 'Abdullah bin Ubayy and questioned him, but he swore that he had not said it and said, "Zayd has lied to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." This grieved my heart greatly, until Allah confirmed my truthfulness and the surah 'When the hypocrites come to you' was revealed. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called them to seek forgiveness, but they turned their heads away (that is, they did not come), and Allah said concerning them, "As if they were pieces of wood propped up against a wall." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They were fine and handsome in appearance.
Urdu Translation
سیدنا زید بن ارقم رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہہم رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ ایک سفر میں نکلے، جس میں لوگوں کو (کھانے اور پینے کی) بہت تکلیف ہوئی۔ عبداللہ بن ابی (منافق) نے اپنے ساتھی منافقوں سے کہا کہ”تم ان لوگوں کو جو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس ہیں، کچھ مت دو، یہاں تک کہ وہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس سے بھاگ نکلیں“۔ زہیر نے کہا کہ یہ اس شخص کی قرآت ہے جس نے من حولہ پڑھا ہے (اور یہی قرآت مشہور ہے اور قرآت شاذ من حولہ ہے، یعنی یہاں تک کہ بھاگ جائیں وہ لوگ جو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے گرد ہیں) اور عبداللہ بن ابی منافق نے کہا کہ”اگر ہم مدینہ کو لوٹیں گے تو البتہ عزت والا (یعنی مردود نے اپنے آپ کو عزت والا قرار دیا) ذلت والے کو نکال دے گا“(یعنی مردود نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو ذلت والا قرار دیا)۔ میں یہ سن کر رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس آیا اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے بیان کیا تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے عبداللہ بن ابی کے پاس کہلا بھیجا اور اس سے پچھوایا، تو اس نے قسم کھائی کہ میں نے ایسا نہیں کہا اور بولا کہ زید نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے جھوٹ بولا ہے۔ اس بات سے میرے دل کو بہت رنج ہوا، یہاں تک کہ اللہ نے مجھے سچا کیا اور سورۃ ((اذا جآئک المنافقون)) اتری۔ پھر رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے ان کو دعائے مغفرت کے لئے بلایا، لیکن انہوں نے اپنے سر موڑ لئے (یعنی نہ آئے) اور اللہ تعالیٰ نے ان کے حق میں فرمایا ہے کہ”گویا وہ لکڑیاں ہیں دیوار سے ٹکائی ہوئیں“سیدنا زید رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ وہ لوگ ظاہر میں خوب اور اچھے معلوم ہوتے تھے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1938]
