English Translation

Abu Nawfal said: I saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) at the pass of Madinah (that is, that mountain-path of Makkah which is on the road to Madinah). He said: The people of Quraysh used to pass by him, and other people too (al-Hajjaj had crucified him and left him upon it), until Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) too passed by him. He stood there and said: Peace be upon you, O Abu Khubayb! (Abu Khubayb is the agnomen of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Abu Bakr and Abu Bukayr are also his agnomens.) Peace be upon you, O Abu Khubayb! Peace be upon you, O Abu Khubayb! (From this it is known that it is recommended to greet the deceased three times.) By Allah, I used to forbid you from this; by Allah, I used to forbid you from this; by Allah, I used to forbid you from this (that is, from taking up the caliphate and rule). By Allah, as far as I know, you used to fast, and pray at night, and maintain the ties of kinship. By Allah, the group of which you are (called) the worst is an excellent group (this he said in the opposite sense, by way of irony — that is, it is a bad group; and in one narration it is plain that it is a bad group). Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) went from there. Then the news of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar's (may Allah be pleased with them both) stopping there and speaking reached al-Hajjaj, so he had him taken down from the cross and cast into the Jewish graveyard. (And al-Hajjaj did not understand what that accomplishes: a man may fall anywhere, but his deeds being good is what is necessary.) Then al-Hajjaj sent for his mother, Sayyida Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), but she refused to come to al-Hajjaj. Al-Hajjaj sent again and said: You come, otherwise I will send someone who will seize you by the hair and drag you here. She again refused to come and said: By Allah, I will not come to you until you send me the one who will drag me to you pulling my hair. At last al-Hajjaj said: Bring me my sandals, and putting on his sandals he walked haughtily until he reached Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Have you seen what I have done, by Allah, with the enemy of Allah? (This al-Hajjaj said of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) according to his own belief; otherwise he himself was the enemy of Allah.) Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I have seen that you ruined his world and he ruined your Hereafter. I have heard that you used to call Abdullah bin Zubayr "the son of the woman with two waist-belts"? Indeed, by Allah, I am the woman with two waist-belts. With one belt I used to carry the food of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), so that animals would not eat it; and one belt was that which a woman needs (Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) had torn her belt and made it into two pieces — with one she used to fasten her belt, and of the other she had made a dining-cloth for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); so this was a virtue of Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) which al-Hajjaj considered a fault, and to disgrace Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) he called him "the son of the woman with two waist-belts"). So take heed: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told us that among Thaqif there will arise a liar and a destroyer. The liar we have seen, and as for the destroyer, I consider no one but you. Urdu Translation

ابونوفل کہتے ہیں کہمیں نے سیدنا عبداللہ بن زبیر رضی اللہ عنہ کو مدینہ کی گھاٹی پر دیکھا (یعنی مکہ کا وہ ناکہ جو مدینہ کی راہ میں ہے) کہتے ہیں کہ قریش کے لوگ ان پر سے گزرتے تھے اور دوسرے لوگ بھی (ان کو حجاج نے سولی دے کر اسی پر رہنے دیا تھا)، یہاں تک کہ سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما بھی ان پر سے گزرے۔ وہاں کھڑے ہوئے اور کہا کہ السلام علیکم یا ابوخبیب! (ابوخبیب سیدنا عبداللہ بن زبیر رضی اللہ عنہ کی کنیت ہے اور ابوبکر اور ابوبکیر بھی ان کی کنیت ہے) اسلام علیکم یا ابوخبیب! السلام علیک یا ابوخبیب! (اس سے معلوم ہوا کہ میت کو تین بار سلام کرنا مستحب ہے) اللہ کی قسم میں تو تمہیں اس سے منع کرتا تھا، اللہ کی قسم میں تو تمہیں اس سے منع کرتا تھا، اللہ کی قسم میں تو تمہیں اس سے منع کرتا تھا۔ (یعنی خلافت اور حکومت اختیار کرنے سے) اللہ کی قسم جہاں تک میں جانتا ہوں تم روزہ رکھنے والے اور رات کو عبادت کرنے والے اور ناطے کو جوڑنے والے تھے۔ اللہ کی قسم وہ گروہ جس کے تم برے ہو وہ عمدہ گروہ ہے (یہ انہوں نے برعکس کہا بطریق طنز کے یعنی برا گروہ ہے اور ایک روایت میں صاف ہے کہ وہ برا گروہ ہے) پھر سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما وہاں سے چلے گئے۔ پھر سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کے وہاں ٹھہرنے اور بات کرنے کی خبر حجاج تک پہنچی تو اس نے ان کو سولی پر سے اتروا لیا اور یہود کے قرستان میں ڈلوا دیا۔ (اور حجاج یہ نہ سمجھا کہ اس سے کیا ہوتا ہے۔ انسان کہیں بھی گرے لیکن اس کے اعمال اچھے ہونا ضروری ہیں)۔ پھر حجاج نے ان کی والدہ سیدہ اسماء بنت ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہما کو بلا بھیجا تو انہوں نے حجاج کے پاس آنے سے انکار کر دیا۔ حجاج نے پھر بلا بھیجا اور کہا کہ تم آتی ہو تو آؤ ورنہ میں ایسے شخص کو بھیجوں گا جو تمہارا چونڈا پکڑ کر گھسیٹ کر لائے گا۔ انہوں نے پھر بھی آنے سے انکار کیا اور کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم میں تیرے پاس نہ آؤں گی جب تک تو میرے پاس اس کو نہ بھیجے جو میرے بال کھینچتا ہوا مجھے تیرے پاس لے جائے۔ آخر حجاج نے کہا کہ میری جوتیاں لاؤ اور جوتے پہن کر اکڑتا ہوا چلا، یہاں تک کہ سیدہ اسماء رضی اللہ عنہا کے پاس پہنچا اور کہا کہ تم نے دیکھا کہ اللہ کی قسم میں نے اللہ تعالیٰ کے دشمن کے ساتھ کیا کیا؟ (یہ حجاج نے اپنے اعتقاد کے موافق سیدنا عبداللہ بن زبیر رضی اللہ عنہ کو کہا ورنہ وہ خود اللہ کا دشمن تھا) سیدہ اسماء رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہا کہ میں نے دیکھا کہ تو نے عبداللہ بن زبیر کی دنیا بگاڑ دی اور اس نے تیری آخرت بگاڑ دی۔ میں نے سنا ہے کہ تو عبداللہ بن زبیر کو کہتا تھا کہ دو کمربند والی کا بیٹا ہے؟ بیشک اللہ کی قسم میں دو کمربند والی ہوں۔ ایک کمربند میں تو میں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماور سیدنا ابوبکر صدیق رضی اللہ عنہ کا کھانا اٹھاتی تھی کہ جانور اس کو کھا نہ لیں اور ایک کمربند وہ تھا جو عورت کو درکار ہے (سیدہ اسماء رضی اللہ عنہا نے اپنے کمربند کو پھاڑ کر اس کے دو ٹکڑے کر لئے تھے ایک سے تو کمربند باندھتی تھیں اور دوسرے کا رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماور سیدنا ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کے لئے دسترخوان بنایا تھا تو یہ سیدہ اسماء رضی اللہ عنہا کی فضیلت تھی جس کو حجاج عیب سمجھتا تھا اور سیدنا عبداللہ بن زبیر رضی اللہ عنہ کو ذلیل کرنے کے لئے دو کمربند والی کا بیٹا کہتا تھا)۔ تو خبردار رہ کہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے ہم سے بیان کیا تھا کہ ثقیف میں ایک جھوٹا پیدا ہو گا اور ایک ہلاکو۔ تو جھوٹے کو تو ہم نے دیکھ لیا اور ہلاکو میں تیرے سوا کسی کو نہیں سمجھتی۔ یہ سن کر حجاج کھڑا ہوا اور سیدہ اسماء رضی اللہ عنہا کو کچھ جواب نہ دیا۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1753]ابونوفل کہتے ہیں کہمیں نے سیدنا عبداللہ بن زبیر رضی اللہ عنہ کو مدینہ کی گھاٹی پر دیکھا (یعنی مکہ کا وہ ناکہ جو مدینہ کی راہ میں ہے) کہتے ہیں کہ قریش کے لوگ ان پر سے گزرتے تھے اور دوسرے لوگ بھی (ان کو حجاج نے سولی دے کر اسی پر رہنے دیا تھا)، یہاں تک کہ سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما بھی ان پر سے گزرے۔ وہاں کھڑے ہوئے اور کہا کہ السلام علیکم یا ابوخبیب!
