English Translation
It is narrated from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah that Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) used to relate: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I saw in a dream last night that ghee and honey were dripping from a piece of cloud, and people were taking it in their cupped hands, some taking more and some less. And I saw a rope hanging from the sky to the earth; you (peace be upon him) grasped it and climbed up. Then after you a man grasped it and he too climbed up. Then another man grasped it and he too climbed up. Then another man grasped it and it broke, then it was joined again and he too went up." Hearing this, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! May my father be sacrificed for you, let me interpret it." He (peace be upon him) said, "Very well, interpret it." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "That piece of cloud is Islam, and by the ghee and honey is meant the sweetness and softness of the Qur'an, and the people's taking more and less: some know much of the Qur'an and some little; and that rope which hangs from the sky to the earth is the true religion upon which you (peace be upon him) are. Then Allah will take you (peace be upon him) to Himself upon this religion; after you another man (your caliph) will grasp it and he too will climb up; then another man will grasp it and his state too will be the same; then another man will grasp it and some disturbance will occur, but that disturbance will finally vanish and he too will climb up. O Messenger of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, tell me whether I have interpreted it correctly?" He (peace be upon him) said, "You have said some things correctly and some things wrongly." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! Tell me what mistake I made." He (peace be upon him) said, "Do not swear."

عبیداللہ بن عبداللہ بن عتبہ سے روایت ہے کہسیدنا عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما بیان کرتے تھے کہ ایک آدمی رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس آیا اور کہنے لگا کہ یا رسول اللہ! میں نے رات کو خواب میں دیکھا کہ بادل کے ٹکڑے سے گھی اور شہد ٹپک رہا ہے، لوگ اس کو اپنے لپوں سے لیتے ہیں کوئی زیادہ لیتا ہے اور کوئی کم۔ اور میں نے دیکھا کہ آسمان سے زمین تک ایک رسی لٹکی ہے، آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلماس کو پکڑ کر اوپر چڑھ گئے۔ پھر آپ کے بعد ایک شخص نے اس کو تھاما، وہ بھی چڑھ گیا۔ پھر ایک اور شخص نے تھاما وہ بھی چڑھ گیا۔ پھر ایک اور شخص نے تھاما تو وہ ٹوٹ گئی، پھر جڑ گئی اور وہ بھی اوپر چلا گیا۔ یہ سن کر سیدنا ابوبکر صدیق رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ یا رسول اللہ! میرا باپ آپ پر قربان ہو مجھے اس کی تعبیر بیان کرنے دیجئیے۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ اچھا بیان کر۔ سیدنا ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ وہ بادل کا ٹکڑا تو اسلام ہے اور گھی اور شہد سے قرآن کی حلاوت اور نرمی مراد ہے اور لوگ جو زیادہ اور کم لیتے ہیں وہ بھی بعضوں کو بہت قرآن یاد ہے اور بعضوں کو کم اور وہ رسی جو آسمان سے زمین تک لٹکی ہے وہ دین حق ہے جس پر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمہیں۔ پھر اللہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو اسی دین پر اپنے پاس بلا لے گا آپ کے بعد ایک اور شخص (آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا خلیفہ) اس کو تھامے گا وہ بھی اسی طرح چڑھا جائے گا پھر اور ایک شخص تھامے گا اور اس کا بھی یہی حال ہو گا۔ پھر ایک اور شخص تھامے گا تو کچھ خلل پڑے گا لیکن وہ خلل آخر مٹ جائے گا اور وہ بھی چڑھ جائے گا۔ یا رسول اللہ! میرے ماں باپ آپ پر قربان ہوں مجھ سے بیان فرمائیے کہ میں نے ٹھیک تعبیر بیان کی؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ تو نے کچھ ٹھیک کہا کچھ غلط کہا۔ سیدنا ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم یا رسول اللہ! آپ بیان کیجئے کہ میں نے کیا غلطی کی؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ قسم مت کھا۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1521]
