Hadrat Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud) (may Allah be well pleased with him) reported: We were in the mosque on a Friday night when a man from the Ansar came and said: If a man finds another man with his wife and speaks about it, you will lash him (with the hadd of slander); if he kills (the man), you will kill him (in retaliation); and if he remains silent, he swallows his rage in silence! By Allah, I will certainly ask the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about this. The next day he came to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and submitted: If a man finds another man with his wife and speaks about it, you will lash him; if he kills, you will kill him; and if he remains silent, he swallows his rage in silence! He submitted: O Allah! Open up the ruling on this matter! He said: Then Allah revealed the verses of li'an in Surah al-Nur: 'And those who accuse their wives' (24:6). The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) admonished the man, reminded him, and told him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. He said: No! By Him Who sent you with the Truth! I am not lying. Then he called the woman, admonished her, reminded her, and told her that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. She said: No! By Him Who sent you with the Truth! He (my husband) is lying. Then he began with the man first: he swore four oaths by Allah that he was truthful, then the fifth time (he said) that Allah's curse be upon him if he was lying. Then the woman swore four oaths by Allah (that her husband was lying), then the fifth time (she said) that Allah's wrath be upon her if he (the husband) was truthful. Then the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) effected separation between them.
Urdu Translation
حضرت عبداللہ (بن مسعود) رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے، فرماتے ہیں: ہم جمعہ کی رات مسجد میں تھے کہ انصار میں سے ایک شخص آیا اور کہنے لگا: اگر کوئی شخص اپنی بیوی کے ساتھ کسی مرد کو پائے اور (زبان سے) بات کرے تو تم اسے (حدِّ قذف کے) کوڑے لگاؤ گے، اور اگر (اسے) قتل کر دے تو تم (قصاص میں) اسے قتل کر دو گے، اور اگر خاموش رہے تو غصہ پی کر خاموش رہے! اللہ کی قسم! میں ضرور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے اس بارے میں پوچھوں گا۔ جب اگلا دن ہوا تو وہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا اور عرض کی: اگر کوئی شخص اپنی بیوی کے ساتھ کسی مرد کو پائے اور (زبان سے) بات کرے تو آپ اسے کوڑے لگائیں گے، اور اگر قتل کرے تو آپ اسے قتل کریں گے، اور اگر خاموش رہے تو غصہ پی کر خاموش رہے! اس نے عرض کی: یا اللہ! اس مسئلے کا حکم کھول دیجیے! فرماتے ہیں: تب اللہ تعالیٰ نے لعان کی آیات نازل فرمائیں جو سورۂ نور میں ہیں: "وَالَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ أَزْوَاجَهُمْ" (اور جو لوگ اپنی بیویوں پر تہمت لگائیں)۔ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اس شخص کو نصیحت فرمائی اور یاد دہانی کرائی اور بتایا کہ دنیا کا عذاب آخرت کے عذاب سے ہلکا ہے۔ اس نے کہا: نہیں! اس ذات کی قسم جس نے آپ کو حق کے ساتھ مبعوث فرمایا! میں جھوٹا نہیں ہوں۔ پھر آپ نے عورت کو بلایا اور اسے نصیحت فرمائی اور یاد دہانی کرائی اور بتایا کہ دنیا کا عذاب آخرت کے عذاب سے ہلکا ہے۔ اس نے کہا: نہیں! اس ذات کی قسم جس نے آپ کو حق کے ساتھ مبعوث فرمایا! وہ (خاوند) جھوٹا ہے۔ پس آپ نے پہلے مرد سے (لعان کا عمل) شروع فرمایا، اس نے چار مرتبہ اللہ کی قسم کھائی کہ وہ سچا ہے، پھر پانچویں مرتبہ (کہا) کہ اگر وہ جھوٹا ہو تو اس پر اللہ تعالیٰ کی لعنت ہو۔ پھر عورت نے چار مرتبہ اللہ کی قسمیں کھائیں (کہ خاوند جھوٹا ہے)، پھر پانچویں مرتبہ (کہا) کہ اگر (خاوند) سچا ہو تو اس (عورت) پر اللہ تعالیٰ کا غضب ہو۔ پھر آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ان دونوں کے درمیان جدائی فرما دی۔
