English Translation
A'ishah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), when the people of the slander said about her what they said, said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) intended to go on a journey, he would cast lots among his wives and whichever one's lot was drawn, he would take her with him. A'ishah said: He cast lots among us for a military expedition and my lot was drawn, so I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) after the verse of hijab had been revealed. I was carried in my howdah and set down in it. We traveled until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had finished that expedition of his and returned. When we drew near to Madinah, he announced the departure at night. I got up when they announced the departure and walked until I had passed beyond the army. When I had finished my business, I came back to my riding place and touched my chest, and found that my necklace of Zifar onyx beads had broken. I went back and searched for it, and the search delayed me. The group of people who used to lift my howdah came and loaded it onto my camel that I used to ride, thinking I was inside it. Women in those days were light and not heavy, as they ate only small amounts of food. The people did not notice the lightness of the howdah when they lifted and carried it. I was a young girl. They sent the camel on its way and they traveled. I found my necklace after the army had moved on. I came to their campsite and there was no one calling or answering. I went to the place where I had been, thinking they would notice my absence and come back for me. While I was sitting there, my eyes overcame me and I fell asleep. Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal al-Sulami al-Dhakwani had been behind the army and reached my campsite in the morning. He saw the figure of a sleeping person and recognized me when he saw me, as he had seen me before the hijab was imposed. I woke up when I heard him saying "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" upon recognizing me. I covered my face with my garment. By Allah, we did not exchange a single word, and I did not hear from him any word other than his saying "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un." He made his camel kneel down and stepped on its foreleg. I mounted it, and he led the camel, walking with me until we reached the army during the intense midday heat while they had stopped to rest. She said: Those who were destroyed were destroyed, and the one who took the lead in spreading the slander was Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. Urwah said: I was told that the slander was being spread and discussed in his presence, and he would approve of it, listen to it, and seek to spread it further. Urwah also said: No one was named among the slanderers except Hassan ibn Thabit, Mistah ibn Uthathah, and Hamnah bint Jahsh, along with others whom I have no knowledge of, except that they were a group as Allah the Exalted said, and the chief instigator was said to be Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. Urwah said: A'ishah used to dislike hearing Hassan being reviled in her presence and would say: He is the one who said the verse: "Indeed my father and his father and my honor are all for the defense of Muhammad's honor." A'ishah said: When we arrived in Madinah, I fell ill upon arrival for a month, while the people were spreading the words of the slanderers, and I was unaware of any of it. What made me suspicious during my illness was that I did not see from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) the kindness I used to see from him when I was sick. He would only come in, greet me, and say: "How is she?" and then leave. That made me suspicious, but I was not aware of the evil until I went out after I had recovered. I went out with Umm Mistah toward al-Manasi', which was our place for relieving ourselves. We used to go out only at night, and this was before we had latrines near our houses. Our custom was like that of the earlier Arabs regarding going out to the open. I was walking with Umm Mistah, who was the daughter of Abu Ruhm ibn al-Muttalib ibn Abd Manaf, and her mother was the daughter of Sakhr ibn Amir, the aunt of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, and her son was Mistah ibn Uthathah ibn Abbad ibn al-Muttalib. As we were returning to my house after finishing our business, Umm Mistah stumbled over her garment and said: "May Mistah be ruined!" I said to her: "What a terrible thing you have said! Do you revile a man who was present at Badr?" She said: "O you naive one! Have you not heard what he said?" She then told me what the slanderers had said. I became even more ill. When I returned home, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came in and greeted me, then said: "How is she?" I said: "Will you permit me to go to my parents?" I wanted to confirm the news from them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gave me permission. I said to my mother: "O mother! What are people talking about?" She said: "O my daughter, take it easy. By Allah, seldom has there been a beautiful woman beloved by her husband, having co-wives, except that they speak much against her." I said: "SubhanAllah! Have the people really been talking about this?" I cried that entire night until morning, my tears did not cease, and I could not sleep at all. Then I continued crying the next morning. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called Ali ibn Abi Talib and Usamah ibn Zayd when the revelation was delayed, to consult them about separating from his wife. As for Usamah, he advised the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) based on what he knew of his family's innocence and what he felt for them, saying: "They are your family, and we know nothing but good about them." As for Ali, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has not restricted you, and there are many other women. Ask the servant girl, she will tell you the truth." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called Barirah and said: "O Barirah, have you seen anything that arouses your suspicion?" Barirah said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I have never seen anything objectionable about her, except that she is a young girl who falls asleep while kneading her family's dough, and the pet animal comes and eats it." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up that day and sought support against Abdullah ibn Ubayy while on the pulpit, saying: "O Muslims, who will excuse me from a man whose harm to my family has reached me? By Allah, I know nothing but good about my family, and they have mentioned a man about whom I know nothing but good, and he never entered upon my family except with me." Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, the chief of the Aws, stood up and said: "I will deal with him for you, O Messenger of Allah. If he is from the Aws, we will strike his neck, and if he is from our brothers the Khazraj, command us and we will carry out your order." Then a man from the Khazraj stood up - he was Sa'd ibn Ubadah, the chief of the Khazraj, and the mother of Hassan was his cousin from his clan. He had been a righteous man before, but tribal pride overtook him, and he said to Sa'd ibn Mu'adh: "You have lied! By the life of Allah, you will not kill him, and you are not able to kill him. If he were from your clan, you would not have wanted him killed." Usayd ibn Hudayr, the cousin of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, stood up and said to Sa'd ibn Ubadah: "You have lied! By the life of Allah, we will surely kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing on behalf of the hypocrites." The two tribes, the Aws and the Khazraj, nearly fought each other while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was standing on the pulpit. He kept calming them down until they fell silent. I cried that entire day without my tears ceasing and without being able to sleep. My parents stayed with me the next morning after I had cried for two nights and a day without ceasing in my tears or being able to sleep, until I thought the weeping would split my liver. While my parents were sitting with me and I was crying, a woman of the Ansar sought permission to enter, and I gave her permission. She sat down and cried with me. While we were in that state, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came in, greeted us, and sat down. He had not sat with me since the accusations began, and a month had passed without any revelation coming to him about my matter. He said the testimony of faith when he sat, then said: "As for what follows, O A'ishah, such and such has reached me about you. If you are innocent, Allah will declare your innocence. And if you have committed a sin, then seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant confesses and repents, Allah accepts his repentance." When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) finished his words, my tears dried up completely. I said to my father: "Answer the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on my behalf." He said: "By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah." I said to my mother: "Answer the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." She said: "By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Messenger of Allah." I said, though I was a young girl who had not memorized much of the Quran: "By Allah, I know that you have heard this talk until it has settled in your hearts and you have believed it. If I tell you that I am innocent - and Allah knows I am innocent - you will not believe me. And if I confess to something - and Allah knows I am innocent of it - you will believe me. By Allah, I find no example for myself and you except the father of Yusuf when he said: 'So patience is most fitting. And Allah is the One sought for help against that which you describe.' Then I turned away and lay down on my bed, and Allah knew that I was innocent and that He would declare my innocence. But by Allah, I never thought that Allah would reveal Quran that would be recited concerning me, for I considered myself too insignificant for Allah to speak about me in a matter that would be recited. But I hoped that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would see a dream in which Allah would declare my innocence. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had not left his seat, nor had anyone left the house, when the revelation descended upon him, and he was seized by what used to seize him - perspiration dropped from him like pearls on a winter day, from the weight of the words being revealed to him. When the state of revelation left the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), he was smiling. The first words he spoke were: 'O A'ishah, Allah has declared your innocence.' My mother said to me: 'Get up and go to him.' I said: 'By Allah, I will not go to him, and I praise none but Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.' Allah the Exalted revealed: 'Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what punishment he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment...' until the end of the verses. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, who used to spend on Mistah ibn Uthathah because of his kinship and poverty, said: 'By Allah, I will never spend on Mistah anything after what he has said about A'ishah.' Then Allah revealed: 'And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give to their relatives...' to His saying: 'Forgiving and Merciful.' Abu Bakr said: 'Yes, by Allah, I indeed love that Allah forgive me.' He then restored the spending he used to give to Mistah and said: 'By Allah, I will never withdraw it from him.' A'ishah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had also asked Zaynab bint Jahsh about my matter, saying: 'What do you know or what have you seen?' She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I protect my hearing and sight. By Allah, I know nothing but good about her.' A'ishah said: She was the one who used to compete with me among the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him), but Allah protected her through her piety. However, her sister Hamnah fought on her behalf and was destroyed among those who were destroyed. A'ishah said: By Allah, the man about whom all this was said would say: 'SubhanAllah! By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, I have never uncovered the privacy of any woman.' He was later killed fighting in the cause of Allah.
