أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْجُنَيْدِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ عَرَّسَ بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَافْتَرَشَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنَّا ذِرَاعَ رَاحِلَتِهِ فَانْتَبَهْتُ فِي بَعْضِ اللَّيْلِ فَإِذَا نَاقَةُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لَيْسَ قُدَّامَهَا أَحَدٌ فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَطْلُبُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَإِذَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَيْسٍ قَائِمَانِ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَيْنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَا مَا نَدْرِي غَيْرَ أَنَّا سَمِعْنَا صَوْتًا بِأَعْلَى الْوَادِي فَإِذَا مِثْلُ هَدِيرِ الرَّحَى فَلَمْ نَلْبَثْ إِلَّا يَسِيرًا حَتَّى أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ أَتَانِي اللَّيْلَةَ آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي فَخَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ نِصْفُ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ وَبَيْنَ الشَّفَاعَةِ وَإِنِّي اخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ» فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ وَالصُّحْبَةَ لَمَا جَعَلْتَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِكَ قَالَ «فَإِنَّكُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِي» قَالَ فَأَقْبَلْنَا إِلَى النَّاسِ فَإِذَا هُمْ فَزِعُوا وَفَقَدُوا نَبِيَّهُمْ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنَّهُ أَتَانِيَ اللَّيْلَةَ آتٍ فَخَيَّرَنِي بَيْنَ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ نِصْفُ أُمَّتِي الْجَنَّةَ وَبَيْنَ الشَّفَاعَةِ وَإِنِّي اخْتَرْتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ» فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ نَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ لَمَا جَعَلْتَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ شَفَاعَتِكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ «إِنِّي أُشْهِدُ مَنْ حَضَرَ أَنَّ شَفَاعَتِيَ لِمَنْ مَاتَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي»
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Junayd narrated to us, he said: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, he said: Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Abu al-Malih, from 'Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made us camp one night, and each man spread the foreleg of his mount. I woke up in the middle of the night and found the Prophet's ﷺ camel with no one in front of it. So I went looking for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and found Mu'adh ibn Jabal and Abdullah ibn Qays standing. I said: 'Where is the Messenger of Allah?' They said: 'We don't know, except that we heard a sound at the top of the valley like the rumbling of a millstone.' We did not wait long before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and said: 'A visitor from my Lord came to me tonight and gave me a choice between half of my nation entering Paradise and intercession, and I chose intercession.' We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we adjure you by Allah and by companionship to include us among the people of your intercession.' He said: 'You are among the people of my intercession.' We returned to the people and found they were alarmed and had missed their Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'A visitor came to me tonight and gave me a choice between half of my nation entering Paradise and intercession, and I chose intercession.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we adjure you by Allah to include us among the people of your intercession.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'I bear witness to whoever is present that my intercession is for whoever died not associating anything with Allah from my nation.'
