Hadrat Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated: The first Li'an (mutual cursing) in Islam was when Hilal ibn Umayyah accused Sharik ibn Sahma' with his wife, so he brought it to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "O Hilal, either four witnesses or a prescribed punishment on your back." He said: O Messenger of Allah, verily Allah knows that I am truthful, and Allah will certainly reveal to you what will free my back from the flogging. So Allah revealed: {And those who accuse their spouses...} to the end of the verse. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) called him and said: "Bear witness by Allah that you are indeed from among the truthful in what you have accused her of fornication." So he testified to that four times. Then he said to him in the fifth: "And may the curse of Allah be upon you if you are from among the liars in what you have accused her of fornication." So he did it. Then the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) called her and said: "Stand up and bear witness by Allah that he is indeed from among the liars in what he has accused you of fornication." So she testified to that four times. Then he said to her in the fifth: "And may the wrath of Allah be upon you if he is from among the truthful in what he has accused you of fornication." When it was the fourth or fifth time, she paused such that they thought she would confess. Then she said: I will not disgrace my people for the rest of the day. So she continued with the statement. So the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) separated between them and said: "Look, if she gives birth to him curly-haired with thin legs, then he belongs to Sharik ibn Sahma'. And if she gives birth to him white with straight hair and defective eyes, then he belongs to Hilal ibn Umayyah." So she gave birth to him brown, curly-haired with thin legs. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Were it not for what has been revealed concerning them in the Book of Allah, I would have had something with them."
Urdu Translation
حضرت انس بن مالک رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے، فرماتے ہیں: اسلام میں پہلی لعان ہلال بن امیہ کی تھی جب انہوں نے شریک بن سحماء پر اپنی بیوی کے ساتھ تہمت لگائی، تو اسے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس لایا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «اے ہلال! یا تو چار گواہ لاؤ ورنہ تمہاری پیٹھ پر حد ہے۔» انہوں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! اللہ جانتا ہے کہ میں سچا ہوں اور اللہ ضرور آپ پر ایسی چیز نازل فرمائے گا جو میری پیٹھ کو کوڑوں سے بری کر دے گی۔ پس اللہ نے نازل فرمایا: {اور جو لوگ اپنی بیویوں پر تہمت لگائیں...} آخر آیت تک۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے انہیں بلایا اور فرمایا: «اللہ کی قسم کھا کر گواہی دو کہ تم یقیناً سچوں میں سے ہو اس میں جو تم نے اس پر زنا کی تہمت لگائی ہے۔» پس انہوں نے چار بار اس کی گواہی دی۔ پھر پانچویں بار انہیں فرمایا: «اور تم پر اللہ کی لعنت ہو اگر تم جھوٹوں میں سے ہو اس میں جو تم نے اس پر زنا کی تہمت لگائی ہے۔» پس انہوں نے ایسا کیا۔ پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اسے بلایا اور فرمایا: «کھڑی ہو جاؤ اور اللہ کی قسم کھا کر گواہی دو کہ یہ یقیناً جھوٹوں میں سے ہے اس میں جو اس نے تم پر زنا کی تہمت لگائی ہے۔» پس اس نے چار بار اس کی گواہی دی۔ پھر پانچویں بار اسے فرمایا: «اور تم پر اللہ کا غضب ہو اگر یہ سچوں میں سے ہے اس میں جو اس نے تم پر زنا کی تہمت لگائی ہے۔» جب چوتھی یا پانچویں بار تھی تو وہ خاموش ہو گئی یہاں تک کہ لوگوں نے سمجھا کہ وہ اعتراف کر لے گی۔ پھر اس نے کہا: میں اپنی قوم کو باقی دن تک رسوا نہیں کروں گی۔ پس وہ بات پر قائم رہی۔ تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ان کے درمیان جدائی کر دی اور فرمایا: «دیکھو، اگر وہ اسے گھنگریالے بالوں والا پتلی ٹانگوں والا جنے تو وہ شریک بن سحماء کا ہے، اور اگر سفید سیدھے بالوں والا اور ناقص آنکھوں والا جنے تو وہ ہلال بن امیہ کا ہے۔» تو اس نے اسے گندمی رنگ کا گھنگریالے بالوں والا پتلی ٹانگوں والا جنا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «اگر ان دونوں کے بارے میں کتاب اللہ میں جو نازل ہوا وہ نہ ہوتا تو میرا ان کے ساتھ معاملہ ہوتا۔»
