Hadrat Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated: 'While we were with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) during the expedition of Tabuk and the heat had intensified, the people dispersed. I looked and the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was the closest of them to me. I drew near to him and submitted: "O Messenger of Allah, inform me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise and distance me from the Fire." He stated: "You have asked about a great matter, yet it is easy for the one whom Allah makes it easy for. You worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, establish the obligatory prayer, pay the obligatory Zakah, and fast Ramadan." Then he stated: "If you wish, I shall inform you of the gates of Paradise." I submitted: "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah." He stated: "Fasting is a shield, charity expiates sin, and the man standing in the middle of the night seeking the countenance of Allah." Then he recited this verse: {Their sides forsake their beds; they call upon their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend} [al-Sajdah: 16]. He stated: "If you wish, I shall inform you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and its highest peak." I submitted: "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah." He stated: "The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer, and its highest peak is jihad in the way of Allah. If you wish, I shall inform you of what holds all of that together." He was silent, and two riders were approaching us. I feared they would distract him from my need, so I submitted: "What is it, O Messenger of Allah?" He pointed his finger to his mouth. I submitted: "O Messenger of Allah, will we be held accountable for what we say with our tongues?" He stated: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O son of Jabal! Does anything else cast people on their faces — or he said: on their noses — into the Hellfire except the harvests of their tongues?"'
Urdu Translation
حضرت معاذ بن جبل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے: 'ہم حضور نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ غزوۂ تبوک میں تھے اور گرمی شدید ہو گئی تھی تو لوگ بکھر گئے۔ میں نے دیکھا تو حضور نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم ان میں مجھ سے سب سے قریب تھے۔ میں ان کے قریب ہوا اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! مجھے کوئی ایسا عمل بتائیں جو مجھے جنت میں داخل کرے اور دوزخ سے دور کرے۔ آپ نے ارشاد فرمایا: "تم نے بڑی بات پوچھی ہے اور بے شک یہ اس کے لیے آسان ہے جس کے لیے اللہ آسان کر دے۔ اللہ کی عبادت کرو اور اس کے ساتھ کسی کو شریک نہ کرو، فرض نماز قائم کرو، فرض زکوٰۃ ادا کرو اور رمضان کے روزے رکھو۔" پھر فرمایا: "اگر چاہو تو میں تمہیں جنت کے دروازے بتاؤں؟" میں نے عرض کیا: ہاں، یا رسول اللہ! فرمایا: "روزہ ڈھال ہے، صدقہ گناہوں کو مٹاتا ہے، اور آدمی کا رات کے درمیان اللہ کی رضا کے لیے کھڑا ہونا۔" پھر یہ آیت تلاوت فرمائی: {ان کے پہلو بستروں سے الگ ہوتے ہیں؛ وہ اپنے رب کو خوف اور امید سے پکارتے ہیں اور ہم نے جو انہیں دیا ہے اس میں سے خرچ کرتے ہیں} [السجدہ: 16]۔ فرمایا: "اگر چاہو تو میں تمہیں اس معاملے کا سر، اس کا ستون اور اس کی بلند ترین چوٹی بتاؤں۔" میں نے عرض کیا: ہاں، یا رسول اللہ! فرمایا: "اس معاملے کا سر اسلام ہے، اس کا ستون نماز ہے اور اس کی بلند ترین چوٹی اللہ کی راہ میں جہاد ہے۔ اگر چاہو تو میں تمہیں وہ چیز بتاؤں جو اس سب کو قائم رکھتی ہے۔" آپ خاموش ہو گئے اور دو سوار ہماری طرف آ رہے تھے۔ مجھے ڈر لگا کہ وہ آپ کو میری ضرورت سے مشغول کر دیں گے۔ میں نے عرض کیا: وہ کیا ہے یا رسول اللہ؟ آپ نے اپنی انگلی اپنے منہ کی طرف اشارہ فرمایا۔ میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! کیا ہم اپنی زبانوں سے جو کہتے ہیں اس پر پکڑے جائیں گے؟ فرمایا: "تیری ماں تجھے گم پائے اے ابنِ جبل! کیا لوگوں کو جہنم میں ان کے مونہوں کے بل — یا فرمایا: ان کی ناکوں کے بل — اور کسی چیز نے نہیں گرایا سوائے ان کی زبانوں کی فصلوں کے؟"'
