Hadrat Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) went out to visit the graves, and we went out with him. He told us to sit, and we sat. Then he walked among the graves until he reached a certain grave and conversed with it for a long time. Then the sobbing of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) rose as he wept, and we wept at his weeping. Then he came toward us, and Hadrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) met him and said: O Messenger of Allah, what made you weep? For it has made us weep and alarmed us. He came and sat with us and stated: "Did my weeping alarm you?" We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He stated: "The grave you saw me conversing at is the grave of my mother Aminah bint Wahb. I sought permission from my Lord to visit her, and He granted me permission. Then I sought permission to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not grant me permission, and the verse was revealed to me: 'It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists' (al-Tawbah: 113) to the end of the verse, and 'The seeking of forgiveness of Ibrahim for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him' (al-Tawbah: 114). The tenderness that a child feels for his parent overcame me, and that is what made me weep."
Urdu Translation
حضرت عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم قبرستان دیکھنے نکلے اور ہم بھی آپ کے ساتھ نکلے۔ آپ نے ہمیں بیٹھنے کا حکم دیا تو ہم بیٹھ گئے۔ پھر آپ قبروں میں سے گزرتے ہوئے ایک قبر تک پہنچے اور اس سے دیر تک سرگوشی فرمائی۔ پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی آواز سسکیوں کے ساتھ بلند ہوئی روتے ہوئے، تو ہم بھی آپ کے رونے سے رو پڑے۔ پھر آپ ہماری طرف تشریف لائے تو حضرت عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے استقبال کیا اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! کس چیز نے آپ کو رلایا؟ اس نے ہمیں بھی رلا دیا اور ہمیں پریشان کر دیا۔ آپ تشریف لائے اور ہمارے پاس بیٹھ گئے اور ارشاد فرمایا: کیا میرے رونے نے تمہیں پریشان کر دیا؟ ہم نے عرض کیا: جی ہاں یا رسول اللہ! ارشاد فرمایا: جس قبر پر تم نے مجھے سرگوشی کرتے دیکھا وہ میری والدہ آمنہ بنت وہب کی قبر ہے۔ میں نے اپنے رب سے ان کی زیارت کی اجازت مانگی تو اس نے مجھے اجازت دے دی، پھر میں نے ان کے لیے استغفار کی اجازت مانگی تو مجھے اجازت نہیں دی اور مجھ پر یہ آیت نازل ہوئی: 'نبی اور مومنوں کو زیبا نہیں کہ مشرکوں کے لیے مغفرت مانگیں' (التوبۃ: 113) آخر آیت تک، اور 'ابراہیم کا اپنے باپ کے لیے مغفرت مانگنا صرف ایک وعدے کی وجہ سے تھا' (التوبۃ: 114)۔ تو مجھ پر وہ رقت طاری ہو گئی جو اولاد کو اپنے والدین کے لیے ہوتی ہے، سو اسی نے مجھے رلایا۔
