English Translation
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: "We used to fast on the day of Ashura before the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed, and it was a day on which the Ka'bah would be covered with a cloth. When Allah made fasting in Ramadan obligatory, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever wishes to fast on the day of Ashura may do so, and whoever does not wish to may leave it.'"
Urdu Translation
ام المؤمنین عائشہ صدیقہ رضی اللہ عنہا کہتی ہیں کہ(ہم) رمضان کے روزے فرض ہونے سے پہلے عاشورے کا روزہ رکھا کرتے تھے اور وہ ایک ایسا دن تھا کہ اس میں کعبہ پر غلاف بھی ڈالا جاتا تھا پھر جب اللہ تعالیٰ نے رمضان کو فرض فرمایا تو رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا:”(اب) جو شخص عاشورے کا روزہ رکھنا چاہے رکھ لے اور جو نہ رکھنا چاہے وہ نہ رکھے۔“[مختصر صحيح بخاري/حدیث: 805]
