Hadrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrates from Hadrat Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be well pleased with him) that he was a friend of Umayyah bin Khalaf. Whenever Umayyah passed through Madinah, he would stay with Hadrat Sa'd (may Allah be well pleased with him), and whenever Hadrat Sa'd (may Allah be well pleased with him) passed through Makkah, he would stay with Umayyah. When the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) graced Madinah with his blessed arrival, Hadrat Sa'd (may Allah be well pleased with him) went to Makkah for Umrah and stayed with Umayyah. He said to Umayyah, 'Find me a quiet time so that I may perform Tawaf of the Sacred House.' So Umayyah took him out around midday. Abu Jahl met them and asked, 'O Abu Safwan! Who is this with you?' Umayyah said, 'This is Sa'd.' Abu Jahl said, 'I see you walking about Makkah in safety, while you have given refuge to the apostates and claim that you will aid and support them. By Allah, if you were not with Abu Safwan, you would not return to your family safely.' Hadrat Sa'd (may Allah be well pleased with him) raised his voice and declared, 'By Allah, if you prevent me from this, I shall prevent you from something far more severe — your passage through Madinah.' Umayyah said, 'O Sa'd, do not raise your voice before Abu al-Hakam, the chief of the people of the valley.' Hadrat Sa'd (may Allah be well pleased with him) declared, 'Leave these matters, O Umayyah! By Allah, I have heard the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) state that they will slay you.' Umayyah asked, 'In Makkah?' He replied, 'I do not know.' Umayyah was greatly terrified by this and when he returned home, he said to his wife, 'O Umm Safwan! Did you not see what Sa'd said to me?' She asked, 'What did he say?' He replied, 'He claims that Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) has informed them that they will slay me. I asked him: In Makkah? He said: I do not know.' Umayyah then said, 'By Allah, I shall never leave Makkah.' When the day of Badr arrived, Abu Jahl summoned the people to war saying, 'Go and protect your caravan!' Umayyah was unwilling to go out. Abu Jahl came to him and said, 'O Abu Safwan! You are the chief of the people of the valley. When people see that you have stayed behind, they will also stay behind with you.' Abu Jahl kept urging him until Umayyah said, 'Since you have forced me, by Allah, I shall buy the finest camel in Makkah.' Then Umayyah told his wife, 'O Umm Safwan! Prepare my provisions.' She said, 'O Abu Safwan! Have you forgotten what your Yathribi brother told you?' He replied, 'I have not forgotten. I only intend to go a short distance with them.' When Umayyah set out, he would tie his camel at every halt. He continued doing this until Allah the Almighty caused him to be slain at Badr.

حضرت عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ، حضرت سعد بن حضرت معاذ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت فرماتے ہیں کہ وہ امیہ بن خلف کے دوست تھے۔ جب امیہ مدینہ سے گزرتا تو حضرت سعد رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے یہاں قیام کرتا اور جب حضرت سعد رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ مکہ سے گزرتے تو امیہ کے یہاں قیام فرماتے۔ جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم مدینہ منورہ تشریف لائے تو حضرت سعد رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ عمرہ کی نیت سے مکہ گئے اور امیہ کے ہاں ٹھہرے۔ انہوں نے امیہ سے فرمایا کہ مجھے کوئی خلوت کا وقت بتاؤ تاکہ میں بیت اللہ کا طواف کروں۔ چنانچہ امیہ انہیں دوپہر کے وقت لے کر نکلا۔ حضرت ابوجہل سے ان کی ملاقات ہو گئی۔ اس نے پوچھا: اے ابوصفوان! یہ تمہارے ساتھ کون ہیں؟ امیہ نے بتایا: یہ سعد ہیں۔ حضرت ابوجہل نے کہا: میں تمہیں مکہ میں اطمینان سے طواف کرتا ہوا دیکھ رہا ہوں حالانکہ تم نے بے دینوں کو پناہ دے رکھی ہے اور دعویٰ کرتے ہو کہ تم ان کی مدد اور نصرت کرو گے۔ خدا کی قسم! اگر تم ابوصفوان کے ساتھ نہ ہوتے تو اپنے گھر سلامتی سے نہ جا سکتے۔ حضرت سعد رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے بلند آواز سے فرمایا: اللہ کی قسم! اگر تم نے مجھے اس سے روکا تو میں تمہیں اس سے بھی سخت تر چیز سے روکوں گا یعنی مدینہ کی طرف تمہارا راستہ بند کر دوں گا۔ امیہ نے کہا: سعد! ابوالحکم کے سامنے آواز بلند نہ کرو، وہ اہل وادی کا سردار ہے۔ حضرت سعد رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا: امیہ! یہ باتیں چھوڑو، اللہ کی قسم! میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے سنا ہے کہ وہ تجھے قتل کریں گے۔ امیہ نے پوچھا: کیا مکہ میں؟ فرمایا: مجھے علم نہیں۔ امیہ یہ سن کر سخت خوفزدہ ہوا اور جب اپنے گھر لوٹا تو اپنی بیوی سے کہا: اے ام صفوان! دیکھا نہیں سعد نے مجھ سے کیا کہا؟ اس نے پوچھا: کیا کہا؟ امیہ نے کہا: وہ بتا رہے تھے کہ محمد (صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) نے انہیں خبر دی ہے کہ وہ لوگ مجھے قتل کریں گے۔ میں نے پوچھا: کیا مکہ میں؟ تو انہوں نے فرمایا: مجھے معلوم نہیں۔ امیہ نے کہا: خدا کی قسم! میں مکہ سے کبھی باہر نہیں جاؤں گا۔ جب بدر کی لڑائی کا دن آیا تو حضرت ابوجہل نے لوگوں کو جنگ کے لیے پکارا اور کہا: اپنے قافلے کی حفاظت کو چلو۔ امیہ نے نکلنا پسند نہ کیا۔ حضرت ابوجہل اس کے پاس آیا اور کہا: اے ابوصفوان! تم وادی کے سردار ہو، جب لوگ دیکھیں گے کہ تم پیچھے رہ گئے تو وہ بھی تمہارے ساتھ رک جائیں گے۔ حضرت ابوجہل برابر اسے اکساتا رہا یہاں تک کہ امیہ نے کہا: جب تم نے مجھے مجبور ہی کر دیا تو خدا کی قسم! میں مکہ کا سب سے عمدہ اونٹ خریدوں گا۔ پھر امیہ نے اپنی بیوی سے کہا: اے ام صفوان! میرا سامان تیار کر دو۔ اس نے کہا: اے ابوصفوان! کیا تم اپنے یثربی بھائی کی بات بھول گئے؟ امیہ بولا: نہیں بھولا، میں ان کے ساتھ صرف تھوڑی دور تک جاؤں گا۔ جب امیہ نکلا تو جس منزل پر بھی اترتا اپنا اونٹ باندھے رکھتا تھا۔ وہ برابر یہی احتیاط کرتا رہا یہاں تک کہ اللہ عزوجل نے اسے بدر میں قتل کرا دیا۔
