حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " إِنَّ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ شَجَرَةً لاَ يَسْقُطُ وَرَقُهَا، وَهِيَ مَثَلُ الْمُسْلِمِ، حَدِّثُونِي مَا هِيَ ". فَوَقَعَ النَّاسُ فِي شَجَرِ الْبَادِيَةِ، وَوَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي أَنَّهَا النَّخْلَةُ. قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَاسْتَحْيَيْتُ. فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَخْبِرْنَا بِهَا. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " هِيَ النَّخْلَةُ ". قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَحَدَّثْتُ أَبِي بِمَا وَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِي فَقَالَ لأَنْ تَكُونَ قُلْتَهَا أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِنْ أَنْ يَكُونَ لِي كَذَا وَكَذَا.
English Translation
Hadrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both) narrates that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared: Among the trees there is one whose leaves do not fall, and its likeness is that of a Muslim. Tell me which tree it is. People began thinking about desert trees. Hadrat Abdullah (bin Umar, may Allah be well pleased with them both) says: It came to my mind that it was the date palm, but I felt shy (to speak in the presence of the elders). The people submitted: O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), tell us yourself. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: It is the date palm. Hadrat Abdullah (bin Umar) says: I told my father (Hadrat Umar, may Allah be well pleased with him) what had come to my mind. He said: Had you spoken the answer at that time, it would have been more beloved to me than such and such valuable possessions.
Urdu Translation
حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: درختوں میں ایک درخت ایسا ہے جس کے پتے نہیں جھڑتے اور اس کی مثال مسلمان جیسی ہے۔ مجھے بتاؤ وہ کون سا درخت ہے؟ لوگ جنگلی درختوں کے بارے میں سوچنے لگے۔ عبداللہ (بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما) فرماتے ہیں: میرے دل میں آیا کہ وہ کھجور کا درخت ہے، مگر مجھے شرم آئی (کہ بڑوں کی موجودگی میں بولوں)۔ لوگوں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! آپ ہی بتائیے۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: وہ کھجور کا درخت ہے۔ عبداللہ (بن عمر) فرماتے ہیں: میں نے اپنے والد (حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) کو بتایا کہ میرے دل میں کیا آیا تھا۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: اگر تو اس وقت (جواب) بول دیتا تو یہ مجھے ایسے ایسے (قیمتی) سامان سے بھی زیادہ محبوب ہوتا۔
