حَدَّثنا يعقوب بن إبراهيم بن كثير ووجدنا هذه الأحاديث مكتوبة بخطي عنه قَال حَدَّثنا ابن عُلَيَّة عن روح بن القاسم عن العلاء بن عَبد الرحمن عَن أَبِيه عَن أبي هُرَيرة قَالَ سُئِلَ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم عن الغيبة فقال تذكر أخاك بما يكره قال فإن كان في أخي ما أقول قال فإن كان فيه ما تقول فقد اغتبته وَإن لم يكن فيه فقد بهته اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم عن الغيبة فقال تذكر أخاك بما يكره قال فإن كان في أخي ما أقول قال فإن كان فيه ما تقول فقد اغتبته وَإن لم يكن فيه فقد بهته
English Translation
Yaqub ibn Ibrahim ibn Kathir narrated to us — and we found these hadiths written in my handwriting from him — saying: Ibn Ulayyah narrated to us from Rawh ibn al-Qasim from al-Ala ibn Abd al-Rahman from his father from Hadrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be well pleased with him) who said: The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was asked about backbiting, and he said: "It is mentioning your brother with what he dislikes." He said: 'What if what I say about my brother is true?' He said: "If what you say about him is true, you have backbitten him. And if what you say is not in him, you have slandered him."
