حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فِي يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ وَهُو يَتَغَدَّى فَقَالَ ادْنُ إِلَى الْغَدَاءِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْيَوْمُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَدْرِي مَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ إِنَّمَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ يَوْمُ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ رَمَضَانُ تَرَكَ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فِي يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ وَهُو يَتَغَدَّى فَقَالَ ادْنُ إِلَى الْغَدَاءِ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ الْيَوْمُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَدْرِي مَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ إِنَّمَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ يَوْمُ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ رَمَضَانُ تَرَكَ
English Translation
Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, he stated: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us from al-A'mash from Umarah from Abd ar-Rahman from Hadrat Abdullah (may Allah be well pleased with him) that al-Ash'ath ibn Qays entered upon him on the Day of Ashura while he was having lunch, and he stated: «Come near to the lunch.» He stated: Is not today the Day of Ashura? He stated: «Do you know what the Day of Ashura is? The Day of Ashura is only a day that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to fast before Ramadan was revealed. When Ramadan was revealed, he abandoned it.»
