أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ حَلِيمٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الْمُوَجِّهِ ثنا عَبْدَانُ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ أنبأ يُونُسُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ وَابْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا حَكِيمُ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى قَالَ حَكِيمٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنْيَا قَالَ وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ يَدْعُو حَكِيمًا إِلَى الْعَطَاءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَهُ مِنْهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُمَرَ ؓ دَعَاهُ لِيُعْطِيَهُ فأبى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى حَكِيمٍ أَنِّي أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ حَقَّهُ مِنْ هَذَا الْفَيْءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ فَلَمْ يَرْزَأْ حَكِيمٌ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ
English Translation
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'O Hakim, this wealth is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with generosity of soul will be blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness of soul will not be blessed in it — like one who eats but is never satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand.' Hakim said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I shall not ask anyone for anything after you until I depart this world.' Abu Bakr would invite Hakim to receive his stipend, but he refused. Then Umar invited him to give him something, but he refused. Umar said: 'O Muslims, I bear witness before you that I am offering Hakim his right from this wealth, and he refuses to take it.' Hakim did not take anything from anyone after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) until he died.
