English Translation
Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz and Abu Sa'id ibn Abi Amr narrated to us: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us: Ibrahim ibn Marzuq narrated to us: Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi narrated to us. And Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Qattan in Baghdad informed us: Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Darastawayh narrated to us: Ya'qub ibn Sufyan narrated to us: Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi narrated to us: Sulayman ibn Kathir narrated to us: al-Zuhri narrated from Abu Umama ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf, from his father that the Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited two types of dates: al-Ju'rur and the variety called al-Hubayq. People used to select the worst of their fruits and offer them in charity, so they were prohibited from two types of dates. Then the verse was revealed: 'And do not aim at that which is bad to spend from it' [al-Baqara 267]. Abu al-Walid narrated this with a connected chain, while Muslim ibn Ibrahim and Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated it from Sulayman ibn Kathir as mursal.
