أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ثنا زُهَيْرٌ ثنا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ قَالَ كَتَبَ إِلَيْنَا عُمَرُ ؓ وَنَحْنُ بِأَذْرَبِيجَانَ يَا عُتْبَةُ بْنَ فَرْقَدٍ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ كَدِّكَ وَلَا كَدِّ أَبِيكَ وَلَا كَدِّ أُمِّكَ قَالَهَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَأَشْبِعِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِي رِحَالِهِمْ مِمَّا تَشْبَعُ مِنْهُ فِي رَحْلِكَ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالتَّنَعُّمَ وَزِيَّ أَهْلِ الشِّرْكِ وَلَبُوسَ الْحَرِيرِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلَّا هَكَذَا وَرَفَعَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أُصْبُعَيْهِ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ قَالَ عَاصِمٌ هَذَا فِي الْكِتَابُ
English Translation
Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us... from Abu Uthman who said: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to us while we were in Azerbaijan: O Utbah ibn Farqad, it is not from your earning, nor the earning of your father, nor the earning of your mother - he said this three times - so feed the Muslims in their dwellings from what you eat in your dwelling. And beware of luxury and the appearance of the polytheists, and wearing silk, for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade wearing silk except this much - and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) raised his two fingers. Zuhayr said: Asim said this was in the letter.
