Makhramah And ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAbd al-Qārī > ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ أنبأ أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بِشْرَانَ الْعَدْلُ بِبَغْدَادَ أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الرَّمَادِيُّ أنبأ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أنبأ مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنِ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ وَعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدٍ الْقَارِيِّ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ يَقُولُ مَرَرْتُ بِهِشَامِ بْنِ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ فِي حَيَاةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَاسْتَمَعْتُ قِرَاءَتَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ يَقْرَأُ عَلَى حُرُوفٍ كَثِيرَةٍ لَمْ يُقْرِئْنِيهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَكِدْتُ أَنْ أُسَاوِرَهُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَانْتَظَرْتُ حَتَّى سَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ لَبَبْتُهُ بِرِدَائِهِ فَقُلْتُ مَنْ أَقْرَأَكَ هَذِهِ السُّورَةَ الَّتِي أَسْمَعُكَ تَقْرَؤُهَا؟ قَالَ أَقْرَأَنِيهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ كَذَبْتَ وَاللهِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَهُوَ أَقْرَأَنِي هَذِهِ السُّورَةَ الَّتِي تَقْرَؤُهَا فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَقُودُهُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ هَذَا يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ عَلَى حُرُوفٍ لَمْ تُقْرِئْنِيهَا وَأَنْتَ أَقْرَأْتَنِي سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَرْسِلْهُ يَا عُمَرُ اقْرَأْهَا يَا هِشَامُ فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةَ الَّتِي سَمِعْتُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ اقْرَأْ يَا عُمَرُ فَقَرَأْتُ الْقِرَاءَةَ الَّتِي أَقْرَأَنِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ الْقُرْآنَ أُنْزَلَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ فَاقْرَءُوا مِنْهُ مَا تَيَسَّرَ
English Translation
Abu al-Husayn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bishran al-Adl in Baghdad informed us... from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: 'I passed by Hisham ibn Hakim ibn Hizam reciting Surah al-Furqan during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I listened to his recitation, and he was reciting with many variant letters that the Messenger of Allah had not taught me. I almost accosted him during the prayer, but I waited until he gave the salutation. When he gave the salutation, I seized him by his garment and said: Who taught you this surah that I hear you reciting? He said: The Messenger of Allah taught it to me. I said: You have lied! By Allah, the Messenger of Allah taught me this very surah you are reciting. So I led him to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Surah al-Furqan with letters you did not teach me, and you taught me Surah al-Furqan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Let him go, O Umar. Recite, O Hisham. He recited the reading I had heard. The Prophet said: Thus it was revealed. Then the Prophet said: Recite, O Umar. So I recited the reading the Prophet had taught me. The Prophet said: Thus it was revealed. Then the Messenger of Allah said: Indeed the Quran was revealed in seven modes, so recite from it what is easy.'
