English Translation
Harithah ibn Mudarrib said: I was sitting with Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) when two men came. One of them greeted with salam but the other did not. We said - or he said: Why did your companion not give salam? He said: He has vowed to fast and not speak to any human being today. Abdullah said: How terrible is what you have said! That was only a woman [Maryam] who said that so she would have an excuse, as they used to deny that a child could be born without a husband, except through fornication. So give salam and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong; that is better than that.
