English Translation
And Abu Zakariyya ibn Abi Ishaq and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan informed us; they said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us: Bahr ibn Nasr narrated to us: Ibn Wahb narrated to us: Haywah ibn Shurayh informed me that Khalid ibn Ubayd al-Ma'afiri narrated to him, from Abu al-Mus'ab Mishrah ibn Ha'an, that he heard him say: I heard Uqbah ibn Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever hangs an amulet (tamimah), may Allah not fulfill [his need] for him; and whoever hangs a cowrie shell (wada'ah), may Allah not grant him tranquility." The Shaykh said: The meaning of this too returns to what Abu Ubayd said. It may be that this and its like of prohibition and disapproval concern one who hangs it while believing that complete well-being and the removal of illness come from it, as the people of the Jahiliyyah (the pre-Islamic age) used to do. But as for one who hangs it seeking blessing through the mention of Allah, Most High, in it, while knowing that none removes [harm] except Allah and none defends him besides Him — there is no harm in it, God willing.
