English Translation
Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran in Baghdad informed us, Isma'il ibn Muhammad al-Saffar narrated to us, Sa'dan ibn Nasr narrated to us, Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh narrated to us from Ibn 'Awn, from Anas ibn Sirin, who said: Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for me, and I was delayed. Then he sent for me again, and I came to him. He said: "I used to think that if I ordered you to bite on such-and-such a stone seeking my pleasure, you would do it. I chose for you the best work, and you disliked it. I will write for you the practice (sunnah) of 'Umar." I said: "Then write for me the practice of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said: He wrote: From the Muslims, from every forty dirhams, one dirham; from the people of the covenant, from every twenty dirhams, one dirham; and from those who have no covenant, the full tenth.
