English Translation
Abu Nasr ibn Qatadah informed us > Abu Mansur al-Nadrawi > Ahmad ibn Najdah > Sa'id ibn Mansur > Abu Awanah > Abu Bishr > Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the verse {There is no compulsion in religion} [2:256], he said: It was revealed concerning the Ansar. I asked: Specifically? He said: Specifically. A woman among them who had few surviving children or whose children died young would vow that if she bore a child, she would make him a Jew, seeking thereby his long survival. When Islam came and there were some of their children among the Jews, then when Banu al-Nadir were expelled, the Ansar said: O Messenger of Allah, our children! So Allah revealed: {There is no compulsion in religion}.
