English Translation
Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us > Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub > Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar > Yunus ibn Bukayr > Ibn Ishaq > Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad, the freed slave of Zayd ibn Thabit > Sa'id ibn Jubayr or Ikrimah > Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) struck Quraysh on the day of Badr and returned to Madinah, he gathered the Jews in the market of Qaynuqa' and said: "O assembly of Jews, embrace Islam before what befell Quraysh befalls you." They said: "O Muhammad, do not let it deceive you that you killed some men of Quraysh who were inexperienced and did not know how to fight. If you were to fight us, you would know that we are the real men and that you have never met anyone like us." So Allah Most High revealed regarding their words: {Say to those who disbelieve: You will be overcome and gathered to Hell, and wretched is the resting place. Already there has been for you a sign in two armies which met — one fighting in the cause of Allah} [3:12-13] — the Companions of the Messenger of Allah at Badr — {and another of disbelievers. They saw them to be twice their number by eyesight} [3:13] — to His saying {a lesson for those of vision} [3:13].
