English Translation

Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Anazi, from Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Darimi, from Musa ibn Isma'il, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Muhammad ibn Amr, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that Amr ibn Uqaysh used to have usurious debts from the pre-Islamic era and was reluctant to accept Islam until he collected them. On the day of Uhud, he came and asked: Where are my cousins? They said: At Uhud. He asked: Where is so-and-so? They said: At Uhud. He asked: Where is so-and-so? They said: At Uhud. So he put on his armor, mounted his horse, and headed toward them. When the Muslims saw him, they said: Stay away from us, O Amr! He said: I have believed! He fought until he was wounded and was carried to his family injured. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh came to him and said to his sister: Ask him — was it out of tribal loyalty, anger for his people, or anger for the sake of Allah and His Messenger? He said: Rather, anger for the sake of Allah and His Messenger. So he died and entered Paradise, though he had never prayed a single prayer for Allah.
