English Translation
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Muqri' informed us, from al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yusuf ibn Ya'qub, from Abd al-Wahid ibn Ghiyath, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from Murrah al-Hamdani, from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Our Lord marvels at two men: a man who rises from his bedding and blanket from among his beloved ones and family to pray, out of desire for what I have and fear of what I have; and a man who fights in the cause of Allah and his companions are routed, but he knows the consequences of fleeing and the reward of returning, so he returns until his blood is shed. Allah the Almighty says to His angels: Look at My servant — he returned out of desire for what I have and fear of what I have until his blood was shed. This has also been narrated in its meaning from Abu al-Darda' in a raised narration.
