أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ ثنا ابْنُ أَبِي قُمَاشٍ يَعْنِي مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عِيسَى أنبأ سَعِيدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ح قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَابْنُ عَائِشَةَ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ كِلَاهُمَا عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ صُهَيْبٍ ؓ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْهِ بِشَيْءٍ لَا يُفْهَمُ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّكَ تُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَا يُفْهَمُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ أَعْجَبَهُ كَثْرَةُ قَوْمِهِ فَقَالَ مَنْ يَفِي لِهَؤُلَاءِ أَوْ مَنْ يَقُومُ لِهَؤُلَاءِ؟ قَالَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ خَيِّرْ أَصْحَابَكَ بَيْنَ أَنْ نُسَلِّطَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَدُوًّا فَيَسْتَبِيحَ بَيْضَتَهُمْ أَوِ الْجُوعَ أَوِ الْمَوْتَ فَخَيَّرَهُمْ فَاخْتَارُوا الْمَوْتَ قَالَ فَمَاتَ مِنْهُمْ فِي ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفًا قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَقُولُ اللهُمَّ بِكَ أُقَاتِلُ وَبِكَ أُحَاوِلُ وَبِكَ أُصَاوِلُ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِكَ وَسَائِرُ مَا وَرَدَ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ فِي هَذَا قَدْ مَضَى فِي كِتَابِ الْحَجِّ وَفِي كِتَابِ الدَّعَوَاتِ
English Translation
Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, from Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar, from Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Abi Qumash, from Sa'id ibn Sulayman, from Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah; and from Sulayman ibn Harb and Ibn A'ishah, from Hammad ibn Salamah, both from Thabit al-Bunani, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would move his lips with something incomprehensible. We said: O Messenger of Allah, you move your lips with something we cannot understand. He said: A prophet from among the prophets was impressed by the large number of his people and said: Who can match these, or who can stand against them? He was told: Give your people the choice between having an enemy unleashed upon them to destroy them, or famine, or death. He gave them the choice, and they chose death. Seventy thousand of them died in three days. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: And I say: O Allah, by You I fight, by You I strive, by You I struggle, and there is no power or strength except through You.
