English Translation
Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ya'qub and Abu al-Fadl ibn Ibrahim, from Ahmad ibn Salamah, from Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, from Jarir, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim al-Taymi, from his father who said: We were with Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man said: Had I been with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I would have fought alongside him and given my best. Hudhayfah said to him: Would you really have done that? I remember being with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on the night of al-Ahzab during a night of fierce wind and cold. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Is there a man who will bring me news of the enemy, to be my companion on the Day of Resurrection? No one answered. He repeated the call a second time, and still no one answered. Then he said: O Hudhayfah, go and bring us news of the enemy. Since he called me by name, I had no choice but to go. He said: Bring me news of the enemy and do not alarm them against me. I went as if walking in a warm bath until I reached them. Abu Sufyan was warming his back by the fire. I placed an arrow in my bow and was about to shoot him, then remembered the Prophet's words: Do not alarm them against me. Had I shot, I would have hit him. I returned as if walking in a warm bath. When I reached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), the cold struck me. I reported to him, and he covered me with a spare cloak he had been wearing while praying. I slept until morning. When I awoke, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Get up, O sleeper!
