أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْقَطِيعِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ جُمَيْعٍ ثنا أَبُو الطُّفَيْلِ ثنا حُذَيْفَةُ بْنُ الْيَمَانِ ؓ قَالَ مَا مَنَعَنِي أَنْ أَشْهَدَ بَدْرًا إِلَّا أَنِّي خَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَأَبِي حُسَيْلٍ قَالَ فَأَخَذَنَا كُفَّارُ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ تُرِيدُونَ مُحَمَّدًا فَقُلْنَا مَا نُرِيدُهُ مَا نُرِيدُ إِلَّا الْمَدِينَةَ فَأَخَذُوا عَلَيْنَا عَهْدَ اللهِ وَمِيثَاقَهُ لَنَنْصَرِفَنَّ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ وَلَا نُقَاتِلُ مَعَهُ فَأَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ الْخَبَرَ فَقَالَ انْصَرِفَا نَفِي لَهُمْ بِعَهْدِهِمْ وَنَسْتَعِينُ بِاللهِ عَلَيْهِمْ
English Translation
Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us from Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Qati'i, from Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, from his father, from Abdullah ibn Muhammad - and Abdullah said: I also heard it from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Shayba - from Abu Usama, from al-Walid ibn Jumayi', from Abu al-Tufayl, from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: What prevented me from attending Badr was that I and my father Husayl went out, and the disbelievers of Quraysh caught us. They said: You intend to go to Muhammad. We said: We do not intend that, we only intend Madinah. They made us swear by Allah that we would go to Madinah and not fight with him. We came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and told him. He said: Go back. We will fulfill our oath to them and seek Allah's help against them.
