أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَخْتَوَيْهِ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ أنبأ مُسْلِمٌ وَأَبُو عُمَرَ قَالَا ثنا هِشَامٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِ��َّ ﷺ جَلَدَ فِي الْحَدِّ بِالْجَرِيدِ وَقَالَ أَبُو عُمَرَ ضَرَبَ فِي الْخَمْرِ بِالْجَرِيدِ وَالنِّعَالِ وَضَرَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ أَرْبَعِينَ فَلَمَّا أَنْ وَلِيَ عُمَرُ ؓ قَالَ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ دَنَوْا مِنَ الرِّيفِ فَمَا تَرَوْنَ فِي حَدِّ الْخَمْرِ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ ؓ نَرَى أَنْ تَجْعَلَهُ كَأَخَفِّ الْحُدُودِ فَجَلَدَهُ ثَمَانِينَ
English Translation
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to punish for drinking with palm branches and sandals. Abu Bakr flogged forty. When Umar became caliph, he said: "The people have come close to the fertile lands (and are drinking more). What do you think about the punishment for drinking?" Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf said: "We think you should make it the lightest of the prescribed punishments." So Umar flogged eighty.
