English Translation
Al-Sha'bi said regarding a man who declares his wife forbidden to himself: They say that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) made it three divorces. Al-Sha'bi said: He (may Allah be pleased with him) did not say this. He only said: I neither make it lawful nor make it forbidden. We narrated previously from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that it counts as three if intended, but that is a weak narration. And Allah knows best.
