أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو أنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ ثنا إِسْحَاقُ مِنْ كِتَابِهِ أنا جَرِيرٌ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ السَّلْمَانِيِّ قَالَ كَانَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ يُعْطِي الْجَدَّ مَعَ الْإِخْوَةِ الثُّلُثَ وَكَانَ عُمَرُ ؓ يُعْطِيهِ السُّدُسَ وَكَتَبَ عُمَرُ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ ؓ إِنَّا نَخَافُ أَنْ نَكُونَ قَدْ أَجْحَفْنَا بِالْجَدِّ فَأَعْطِهِ الثُّلُثَ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ هَا هُنَا أَعْطَاهُ السُّدُسَ فَقَالَ عَبِيدَةُ فَرَأْيُهُمَا فِي الْجَمَاعَةِ أَحَبُّ إِلِيَّ مِنْ رَأْيِ أَحَدِهِمَا فِي الْفُرْقَةِ
English Translation
Abu Sa'id ibn Abi Amr informed us: Abu Abdullah ibn Ya'qub narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Nasr narrated to us: Ishaq narrated from his written records: Jarir narrated from al-A'mash from Ibrahim from Abidah al-Salmani who said: Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give the grandfather a third alongside the siblings, while Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give him a sixth. Umar wrote to Abdullah: 'We fear we have been unjust to the grandfather, so give him a third.' When Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came here, he gave him a sixth. Abidah said: 'Their combined opinion is more beloved to me than the opinion of one of them alone.'
