قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ : مَالِكٌ وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ بِالنَّاسِ فَلْيُخَفِّفْ فَإِنَّ فِيهِمْ الضَّعِيفَ وَالسَّقِيمَ وَالْكَبِيرَ وَإِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ لِنَفْسِهِ فَلْيُطَوِّلْ مَا شَاءَ.
English Translation
He said: I read to 'Abd al-Rahman: from Malik; and Ishaq told us: Malik informed us, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When one of you leads the people in prayer, let him shorten it, for among them are the weak, the sick, and the elderly. But when one of you prays alone, let him lengthen it as he wishes."
