حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مَالِكٍ الْقُرَظِيِّ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ ثَوْبَانَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَا تَعُدُّونَ الشَّهِيدَ قَالُوا الَّذِي يُقَاتِلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ قَالَ إِنَّ الشَّهِيدَ فِي أُمَّتِي إِذًا لَقَلِيلٌ الْقَتِيلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ شَهِيدٌ وَالطَّعِينُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ شَهِيدٌ وَالْغَرِيقُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ شَهِيدٌ وَالْخَارُّ عَنْ دَابَّتِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ شَهِيدٌ وَالْمَجْنُوبُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ شَهِيدٌ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ الْمَجْنُوبُ صَاحِبُ الْجَنْبِ.
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ubaid narrated to us, who said: Muhammad - meaning Ibn Ishaq - narrated to us, from Abu Malik ibn Tha'labah ibn Abi Malik al-Qurazi, from Umar ibn al-Hakam ibn Thawban, from Abu Hurairah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "What do you consider a martyr?" They said: "The one who fights in the cause of Allah until he is killed." He said: "Then the martyrs of my Ummah would be very few. The one killed in the cause of Allah is a martyr, the one who dies of plague in the cause of Allah is a martyr, the one who drowns in the cause of Allah is a martyr, the one who falls from his mount in the cause of Allah is a martyr, and the one who dies of a side ailment (pleurisy) in the cause of Allah is a martyr." Muhammad said: "Al-majnub is the one with a side ailment (pleurisy)."
