English Translation
Wahb ibn Jarir told us: my father told us: I heard al-Saqab ibn Zuhayr narrating from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ata ibn Yasar, from Abdullah ibn Amr, who said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, wearing a cloak of striped fabric trimmed, or fastened, with brocade, and said: This companion of yours wants to raise up every shepherd, son of a shepherd, and bring down every horseman, son of a horseman. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, rose in anger, seized the front of his cloak and pulled him, saying: I do not see upon you the garments of one who understands. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, returned and sat down, and said: When Noah, peace be upon him, was approached by death, he called his two sons and said: I am giving you a concise testament: I command you to two things and forbid you two things. I forbid you shirk and pride, and I command you to say There is no god but Allah, for if the heavens and the earth and all that is in them were placed in one pan of the scale, and There is no god but Allah were placed in the other pan, it would outweigh them; and if the heavens and the earth were a closed ring and There is no god but Allah were placed upon it, it would break it open. And I command you to say Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, for it is the prayer of every created thing, and by it every created thing is granted provision.
