حَدَّثَنَا عَارِمٌ حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ عَنْ أَبِيهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ ذَكَرْتُ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الصَّوْمَ فَقَالَ صُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ عَشَرَةِ أَيَّامٍ يَوْمًا وَلَكَ أَجْرُ التِّسْعَةِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَصُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ تِسْعَةِ أَيَّامٍ يَوْمًا وَلَكَ أَجْرُ الثَّمَانِيَةِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ صُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ ثَمَانِيَةِ أَيَّامٍ يَوْمًا وَلَكَ أَجْرُ تِلْكَ السَّبْعَةِ قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أَقْوَى مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ حَتَّى قَالَ صُمْ يَوْمًا وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمًا.
English Translation
Arim told us: Mu'tamir told us, from his father: Abu al-Ala told us, from Mutarrif, from Ibn Abi Rabi'ah, from Abdullah ibn Amr, who said: I mentioned fasting to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: Fast one day out of every ten, and you shall have the reward of the nine. I said: I am able to do more than that. He said: Then fast one day out of every nine, and you shall have the reward of the eight. I said: I am able to do more than that. He said: Fast one day out of every eight, and you shall have the reward of those seven. I said: I am able to do more than that. He continued in this manner until he said: Fast a day and break your fast a day.
