حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ أَوْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ هِلَالٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو يَقُولُ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو صُمْ الدَّهْرَ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ قَالَ وَقَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ { مَنْ جَاءَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا } قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي أُطِيقُ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ صُمْ صِيَامَ دَاوُدَ كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا.
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us: Shu'bah narrated from Sa'd ibn Ibrahim from Hilal ibn Talhah - or Talhah ibn Hilal - who said: I heard Abdullah ibn Amr saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "O Abdullah ibn Amr, fast the whole month and you will have three times the reward." I said: "I am able to do more than that." He kept going until he said: "Fast one day and break your fast one day. That is the fast of Dawud (David), and it is the best of fasting."
