English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ubayd narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman who said: I entered upon Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, and he asked me, thinking I was from the children of Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah. I said: "I am actually from the Kalbiyyah." Abdullah said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entered my house and said: 'Have I not been informed that you read the Quran every day and night? Read it in a month.' I said: 'I am able to do more than that.' He said: 'Then read it in half a month.' I said: 'I am able to do more than that.' He said: 'Then read it in every seven days and do not exceed that. And I have been informed that you fast perpetually.' I said: 'Indeed I do, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Fast three days of every month.' I said: 'I am able to do more than that.' He said: 'Then fast two days of every week.' I said: 'I am able to do more than that.' He said: 'Then fast the fast of Dawud (David) - fast one day and break your fast one day, for it is the most balanced fasting before Allah. He would not break his promise when he made one, and he would not flee when he met the enemy.'"
