حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ أَنَّ نَوْفًا وَعَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْعَاصِي اجْتَمَعَا فَقَالَ نَوْفٌ لَوْ أَنَّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا فِيهِمَا وُضِعَ فِي كِفَّةِ الْمِيزَانِ وَوُضِعَتْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فِي الْكِفَّةِ الْأُخْرَى لَرَجَحَتْ بِهِنَّ وَلَوْ أَنَّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا فِيهِنَّ كُنَّ طَبَقًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ لَخَرَقَتْهُنَّ حَتَّى تَنْتَهِيَ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَغْرِبَ فَعَقَّبَ مَنْ عَقَّبَ وَرَجَعَ مَنْ رَجَعَ فَجَاءَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ كَادَ يَحْسِرُ ثِيَابَهُ عَنْ رُكْبَتَيْهِ فَقَالَ أَبْشِرُوا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ هَذَا رَبُّكُمْ قَدْ فَتَحَ بَابًا مِنْ أَبْوَابِ السَّمَاءِ يُبَاهِي بِكُمْ الْمَلَائِكَةَ يَقُولُ هَؤُلَاءِ عِبَادِي قَضَوْا فَرِيضَةً وَهُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَ أُخْرَى.
English Translation
Affan narrated to us: Hammad - meaning Ibn Salamah - narrated from Thabit from Abu Ayyub that Nawf and Abdullah ibn Amr - meaning Ibn al-As - gathered together. Nawf said: "If the heavens and the earth and everything in them were placed on one side of the scale, and 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah) were placed on the other side, it would outweigh them. And if the heavens and the earth and everything in them were a solid plate of iron and a man said 'La ilaha illallah,' it would pierce through them until it reaches Allah the Mighty and Majestic." Abdullah ibn Amr said: "We prayed Maghrib with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Those who stayed behind stayed, and those who left returned. Then he (peace be upon him) came, having nearly uncovered his garment from his knees, and said: 'Rejoice, O community of Muslims! This is your Lord who has opened a gate of the gates of heaven, boasting about you to the angels, saying: These are My servants who have fulfilled an obligation and are waiting for another.'"
