English Translation
Sulayman ibn Dawud told us: Isma'il informed us: Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Halhalah informed me, from Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Ataa ibn Alqamah: that he was sitting with Ibn Umar in the market, with Salamah ibn al-Azraq beside him, and a funeral passed by, followed by weeping. Abdullah ibn Umar said: If the family of this deceased person had left off weeping, it would have been better for their deceased. Salamah ibn al-Azraq said: Do you say that, O Abu Abd al-Rahman? He said: Yes, I say it. He said: I heard Abu Hurayrah - when a deceased person from the family of Marwan died, and the women gathered weeping over him, Marwan said: Get up, O Abd al-Malik, and forbid them from weeping. Abu Hurayrah said: Leave them, for a deceased one from the family of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, died, and the women gathered weeping over him, and Umar ibn al-Khattab got up to forbid them and drive them away. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Leave them, O Ibn al-Khattab, for the eye weeps, and the heart is stricken, and the bereavement is recent. Ibn Umar said: Did you hear this from Abu Hurayrah yourself? He said: Yes. He said: Does he relate it from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him? He said: Yes. He said: Then Allah and His Messenger know best.
