English Translation

Affan told us: Hammad ibn Salamah told us: Ali ibn Zayd informed us, from Yahya ibn Ya'mar: I said to Ibn Umar: We have men among us who claim that matters are in their own hands - if they wish, they act, and if they wish, they do not act. He said: Tell them that I am free of them, and they are free of me. Then he said: Gabriel, peace be upon him, came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Muhammad, what is Islam? He said: You worship Allah, associating nothing with Him, establish the prayer, give the zakat, fast Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the House. He said: If I do that, am I a Muslim? He said: Yes. He said: You have spoken truly. He said: What is excellence in worship? He said: That you fear Allah, exalted is He, as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you. He said: If I do that, am I one who excels? He said: Yes. He said: You have spoken truly. He said: What is faith? He said: That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the resurrection after death, Paradise, the Fire, and the divine decree in its entirety. He said: If I do that, am I a believer? He said: Yes. He said: You have spoken truly. Affan told us: Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from Ishaq ibn Suwayd, from Yahya ibn Ya'mar, from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with something similar. He said: And Gabriel, peace be upon him, used to come to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the form of Dihyah.
